Heartburn and drinks

I feel like everything these days gives me heartburn, some days worse than others. I've been battling it all pregnancy. Question, have you ladies found any drinks with flavor that actually doesn't bother your heartburn?? I'm looking for something more refreshing than milk based drinks, even water seems to make it act up some days.

Re: Heartburn and drinks

  • Unfortunately I don't really have any suggestions but I would love to hear what others say. I can pretty much have anything in the morning but the later in the day it gets water or any kind of liquid gives me terrible heartburn/reflux. Which is super frustrating when I'm supposed to be staying hydrated

  • Literally everything gives me heart burn. :(
  • I've found almond milk with honey seems to help. And it's crazy but you're right, water makes the heartburn worse. How I'm supposed to stay hydrated I have no idea.
  • It's so true, all I want is to "chug" something that isn't water and not suffer for it lol. I kind of didn't expect any miracle drink responses, I think I've tried everything. Sorry all you ladies are having the same problem! The end is near :)
  • I'm having the same issues! Iced tea seems to be better for me than water. I found these chia waters at Sprouts that are really good and don't aggravate it too much. The brand is Xiomega and I love the mandarin one. They're kind of pricey, so I try to only have one a day! Coconut water has been ok, too!
  • I forgot one! I froze watermelon and then blended it with coconut water and made a smoothie/slushie. It was refreshing and hydrating! I've had heartburn and nausea this whole pregnancy, so I've had to get creative. :)
  • Usually if I take Tums before I eat or drink it is not so bad... And don't lie down!

  • Have you tried apple cider vinegar? If u dilute it with water, it's a bit more tolerable! That is, to help with heartburn.. Not as a yummy drink lol I do enjoy the bolt house fruit juices tho and those seem to be ok w my heartburn!

I do this a lot before I eat and it does help. I just get a bottle of water ready and then I chug a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and quickly chase it with the water. It hasn't been working nearly as good as it did earlier on in the pregnancy, but still definitely helps! I also find the chewy tums (I think @Kelseyrayay talked about them too) help more than the regular Tums/Smoothies that I had been using. Just be careful because they say not to exceed 4 in a 24 hr period if pregnant and you are supposed to take 2 at a time....
  • My doc also recommended that if TUMs tend to be a daily thing, they recommend Nexium instead (I prefer non medication remedies but that's just me). Something you might be interested to ask your doctor about.
  • My doctor told me even water can irritate heartburn because it triggers your stomach acids to do something or another (sorry, the convo was 9 months ago lol). What I have found really really works for me is Omeprazole, which you can find at Walmart for $5 and some change if you get the Equate. I take two 20mg pills in the morning every day and I literally have not had heartburn at all in months. A nurse recommended to go this route instead of the Prescription version because it's about $46 cheaper!

Disclaimer: Omeprazole was prescribed by my doctor. I didn't start taking it on my own and am not suggesting that you do either. Talk to your OB first.
  • Carbonated water like Pellegrino or Perrier doesn't give me heartburn like flat water does. Not sure why, but since it works I'm sticking with it!!
  • You could try going to the natural food store and buy some aloe vera juice (inner filet). It's not the best tasting stuff, but it does help with heartburn and you can mix it with something else if the taste is too much for you.
  • My doctor said I can take zantac twice a day just took my first one tonight we will see how it works out
  • My midwife suggested papaya enzyme and it seems to work pretty well if I take it with each meal. Unfortunately I keep forgetting to take them until it's too late... :/
