PSA: Target Breast Pumps through Insurance

So I spent 2+ hours on the phone with my insurance company (United Health Care) this week. A small fraction of that was to determine how to order a breast pump. The first (useless) person I spoke to told me that I did not need a prescription (lie) and just to go to the Target pharmacy and they would order me an Ameda Purely Yours and that was the only option.

OK, fine, called pharmacy and they said 1. I need a prescription and 2. If I called this 800 number everything would be easier. Well, turns out I had a second option of a Medela Pump in Style through the phone number.

So, all that to say, if you are told to got to Target, try calling 

1.855.406.PUMP (7867)

  to see if you have more options.

    I have UHC and just went to https://www.breastpumps.aeroflowinc.com/ and filled out their form. Took just a few minutes and received a call 3 business days later to confirm that my selection was approved but they would not officially order it until 30 days prior to my due date per insurance requirements. There are quite a few options, including the 2 you mentioned from Target. I decided to go with the Spectra S2.

    Can your doctors office help you with this? In my area, it's very common practice for the obstetrician's office to give you the form to fill out (around week 28) and then submit everything for you. I received a phone call and email about my options, almost immediately. Told them which one I wanted (Medela) and received it within 3 days. It's unfortunate if they can't, insurance companies are such a pain! Sounds like your making some progress tho! Good luck!

    I also used aeroflow and have United health care. United sucks, but I didn't even have to speak to them once. It only took a few minutes and they delivered the Medela in style right to my house a month before my due date. So easy!

    I have to wait until we meet my deductible which won't be after the baby is born. Then, it's 20% co insurance. I'm going to save this info, though. Thanks!

    What kind of insurance do you have? That's unfortunate you have to pay towards it. My understanding was that with the whole Obamacare changes (not looking for a political debate), insurance companies had to provide at least the basics of pumps for free..? Maybe something worth looking into, if it saves you $$.

    I probably only spent 15 minutes dealing with the breast pump. The other hour and 45 minutes was dealing with our incentive program, which is really not designed for pregnant woman. Everything has been (adequately) sorted out and my pump is at Target waiting for me.

    That was my understanding as well but when I called insurance (Ambetter) that is what they told me.

    I have to pay a 20% co insurance as well. Plus they only cover a single breast bump, if I want a double I have to pay the rest. However, they will pay in full for a manual pump so I'm pretty sure this is how they get around that law.

    My insurance doesn't cover a pump at all, smh. I have Duke Basic which is part of Wellpath Coventry

    I did mine all online, they even sent the script request to my doctor for me. It was so easy and my medela pump is in the mail today! I did mine through 1naturalway.com

    It was the most highly recommended site according to the local news station that did an investigational piece on it, because the anchor was pregnant. The best part was, you just feed in your info. The did have a free option which for me was a dual medela pump. But you could also pay more to upgrade. While i understand upgrading is not free, the upgrade cost is far less than what you would pay in the store for the same pump.

    Mine covers 50% if I want an electric and 100% for Manuel @jessicayvette80 I have Coventry also (I live in nc) double check.
