Exhaustion??

HELP, I'm almost 6 weeks and so incredibly tired i never experienced this in any of my pregnancies. Normally a very busy body or a 5 hr power or coffee or energy drink to kick it up. Since I am pregnant kind of laying off all that stuff... any suggestions?

Re: Exhaustion??

  • I would love to hear suggestions about that as well...I'm a FTM and almost 6 weeks as well and I experiencing some major fatigue...I typically drink diet coke as my caffeine but I am trying to lay off of it and get rid of the habit all together. Fortunately, I am on vacation but i am having a hard time getting through the day without at least 1 nap.

  • I am at almost 5 weeks and I have been sooo tired. I used to go to be at 11 but now I am in bed before 9. I think sleeping more has made it easier to get though most of the day but my 6pm I am in a haze.

Sleep! You may also be tired if you're cutting way back on caffeine. Depending on who you talk to or where you read it, you can have up to 300mg of caffeine a day. That's 1-2 cups of coffee, or 3-4 cups of tea. Maybe try slowly cutting back rather than cutting out all together?

  • I stopped caffeine back in May in hopes that we would be successful in getting pregnant this summer. I am also feeling the exhaustion more. I will be six weeks tomorrow. I have been trying to work in 1-2 hour naps each day. That is working for now, but work starts back in 2 weeks. I will be teaching all day and then coaching after school. Naps will be improbable then. I have no idea how I am going to manage.

  • I don't know how some ladies are doing it. The only caffeine I ever consumed before pregnancy was chocolate or the occasional pepsi. Caffeine and I are not friends because I get bad headaches.
Honestly, I'm pretty tired. I used to crash for the night around 11 or 12 and now I barely make it to 9. I can't imagine what it must be like to have pregnancy fatigue AND be cutting out caffeine at the same time. Damn that sounds hard.

I'm especially lucky to work from home in my PJs...so napping between conference calls is totally possible.
For those of you who have to be on your feet all day and actually be moving your bodies about for 8-12 hours a day, I am in awe! You're amazing!

  • I'm almost 8 weeks now and I sleep constantly! I fall asleep early and sleep in way late and still I have to take a nap mid day. I'm just doing my best to listen to my body.
  • I'm tired all the time too. I'm six weeks and I don't remember being this tired with my two boys of course I wasn't in my 30's then, but it doesn't help that my 5 year old had a nightmare at 3 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep so I ended staying up with him. I also start my new job tonight and I don't know how I'll make it through without falling on my face.
  • 12 month old is going through a growth spurt.  So 12:30am BOTTLE TIME!

  • Glad I'm not alone. I'm laying in bed now. I've been going to bed early and sleeping in late. So tired. Only thing that helps is naps and shakeology smoothies. I try one shake a day . I've given up coffee but when it's too bad I have a few sips. I'm 7 weeks never been this tired in my life. Including when I worked full time and double major in college.
  • @lightrox-- saw that you are starting a new job tonight! best of luck! I too started a new job on Monday. I found out I was pregnant on Friday! Wondering if you have told your new employer about the pregnancy yet or what your plans are in that regard? I am trying to figure out what is best! Best of luck to you! :)
  • I started a new job the first of this month. I'm 5 weeks, I'm thinking of telling them in September if all goes well :) I don't want to tell them too early
  • @MariMar87- that is kind of how I feel. I am hesitant as I do not want to say anything too early, but I wonder if they would appreciate the up front honesty. It's an akward situation! Best of luck to you :)

Thanks I'm really enjoying my first day but I'm not telling my employer until later probably almost second trimester it won't affect my job until March but that is the slow time so the timing might actually be perfect. They are really flexible with my schedule right now knowing I have two other children at home that I have to schedule around so I don't think they will mind. Good luck and let me know what you plan to do, but you shouldn't feel pressured to tell them early unless something about your job is hazardous to you or the baby.
  • I'm 7 weeks and constantly exhausted! I take a 2-3 hour nap when I get home from work and still go to bed by 9 or 10! "Energy" foods like apples do help a little but I can't wait for my body to settle down. My doctor says once I reach the 2nd trimester I should have more energy but by the 3rd trimester I'll be sleeping again! Here's to no sleep for the next several years!

Pre-pregnancy I drank red bull ( I like the taste ) and since I found out I was pregnant I've pretty much cut out any extra caffeine except for the occasional coca cola... My first 3 weeks I was exhausted and yesterday I had a good 3 hr mid afternoon nap... Not good. Nap only for 30 minutes at a time.. Fight that urge to curl back up and sleep for another hour. A holistic doctor told me that I should try : high fiber cereals for breakfast, walking for 15-30 minutes, lighter dinners, walnuts and lots of water

I am so tired somedays I want to curl up under the table! I am a nanny for six month old twins so my days are FULL! When they nap I sit down and relax but they aren't the best sleepers. It's been easier for me to be out and about with them and let them nap on the go but then I don't get to sit down and relax. By the time I get home I can barely move off the couch and I am in bed by 9pm. I am looking forward to the 2nd trimester for a little more energy!!
  • I am in the same boat. I've been taking an hour nap as soon as I get home from work (4:30-5:30) then I am in bed for the night at 8-8:30.
  • Take your nap and try to tough it out till your 2nd tri when your energy levels might return to normal.

I'm dealing with this too. With my first two it was nothing compared to this time. I can all asleep sitting up. I can sleep 12 hours and go back to bed for 2 more (if i had the time). I don't think there is much to do. One thing I have noticed is that if I get a significant amount of sleep at night it does help a little. I've been going to bed at 8pm and getting up at 7am. I'm honestly still tired in the morning, but I feel better throughout the day and my nausea seems to do better on those days as well. GL!
  • @MariMar87 @lightrox thank you for the advice! my only reasoning for thinking I should tell them now is so they can plan for me being away. My job will not be protected by FMLA and the company does not offer maternity leave. Also, my short term disability has a pre-existing condition clause. Since I am pregnant before I am eligible for the benefit in 30 days I can not get paid leave. SO, all I am entitled to is using the PTO I will have acquired by then which is only going to be about 3 weeks. I am relying on them letting me take unpaid leave for a few weeks after that. But legally, they don't have to nor do they have to protect my job. Stressed!

Have you looked into buying into a STD plan that doesn't do pre existing condition for your maternity?  I know it would suck to pay for two plans but there are some out there that you could purchase might be something you want to look at.  Also have you been to the doctor yet.  I know it seems weird but if you haven't been to the doctor they have no way of knowing you are pregnant.  So when your benefits come around you have the deniability. It's not ideal since its not the most honest way but I swear insurance companies love to gouge you for their benefits.  And they can't prove you knew your were pregnant some people have irregular periods. Just a thought.
  • OMGoodness! I relate with all of you ladies...I am constantly exhausted! I wake up and still feel like I could sleep another full 8 hours. I constantly yawn at work and I've had several colleagues ask if everything is ok. Since no one at work knows I am pregnant (I'm six weeks) it's been incredibly difficult keeping my secret. I drank 2-3 cups of coffee almost every day. When I first found out I was pregnant, I cut it out cold turkey and I had HORRIBLE headaches the first few weeks. The headaches are less severe now but I just can't seem to get going in the morning and throughout the day I just feel SPENT!
  • Oh god yes. I'm just over 7 weeks. There were a few days this week when I napped for an hour... Then stayed awake for 20 minutes... The napped some more... Rinse and repeat. I'm always curled up in bed by 10 at the latest. But I'm waking up bright and early most mornings, so that's a plus I
    guess.
  • @MariMar87 -- I already went to the doctor and had the pregnancy confirmed! I really appreciate the advice, though. I have not looked in to other STD plans but I definitely will. more than being out unpaid, I am worried about not having time off approved at all and losing my job since I will not be protected by FMLA! Thanks again
  • Starting to wonder if the toilet at work would be acceptable for a nap location.  There's a stall that is closed all the time and motion sensors so nobody would ever know.

  • 3rd pregnacy and exhaustion is always my first symptom and main complaint. I also cut caffeine. I found that getting up and drinking a cool cup of water makes me feel more awake and alert as well as keeping water with me and staying hydrated throughout the day. Also yes lots of naps or at least an earlier bedtime when possible.
  • I'm a FTM at six weeks and at first the exhaustion was killing me but now its the constant nausea :( it never goes away for me! Anyone know of any remedies that will help? I haven't actually gotten sick I just feel like I'm going to all the time! Laying down and just going to sleep is the only thing that helps and I can't do that all the time considering I work 40 hours a week

Exercising, usually light cardio, for about 15-20 minutes in the late afternoon gives me the boost I need in the evening. I sleep better at night and feel more rested overall.

THIS I feel like crap on days I'm not active. It's so hard to motivate myself to do it when I'm so tired but it works every time.
