Letting baby cry

My 8 week old cries a lot from gas and when over tired. It makes getting out difficult. She also has trouble sleeping around people talking as the voices make her stay awake. She can really fight sleep. Everyone keeps telling me to just let her cry. I hate letting her cry. She screams and turns beet red and chokes herself. I refuse to let this happen. I feel its wrong. She's a newborn with no way of helping herself. My mother-in-law, mom, sisters, all keep telling me to let her cry. Am I wrong to not believe in doing so? What can I tell them to make them understand?

  • Reading the Happiest Baby on the Block is exactly why I don't let her cry. My problem is convincing my mom and mother in law that letting her cry is not good. I'm so tired of the unsolicited advice! Now my MIL is trying to push me on giving the baby rice cereal.

Happiest Baby on the Block is excellent! If you only have one baby follow it to a T. You won't regret it.
  • Hmm, I have trouble letting my baby cry too. My husband is always let her deal with it right now- she has fed, burped and been changed so let her cry but I can't sit by and watch or hear that. I have to go and comfort her.
  • No, no, no. Don't let a newborn cry. If it feels wrong to you, then it is wrong for you.

  • Put her in a bouncer or swing if she's colicky. If the baby lays down, it increases the pressure on her stomach. It'd ok if she falls asleep sitting up.
  • Don't feel pressured to be a mommy in a way that feels wrong! Most research I have read has suggested that until a baby is into that 3-4 month period (or later depending on baby!) they can't actually self soothe themselves, so letting them cry it out is just torture to the baby. Crying is your little girls way of saying she needs something. I'm sure it is exhausting to not really know how to help her more and keeping it quiet enough for her to get some Zs. I would agree to stay strong and don't add rice cereal unless your pediatrician is recommending it for your baby. Starting cereal so early without a good reason can lead to obesity really early in childhood. Does she sleep in her car seat? You could try putting her in there and then driving around the block until she falls asleep. Then just let her sleep in the seat when you go back inside. Keep going though momma! This phase too will pass. Just maybe avoid family for even a day or two and feel more confident in your parenting plan. When the phone rings just don't answer. Let them get mad if they want to, but decide what you will try next and stick to your guns. It's your baby, like @Bigboobsmcgee said!
  • Babies cry for a reason... end of story! Now obviously you will learn your baby. You will know by the cry what is going on, but that young no way babies cry for a reason .

Babies aren't always in pain when crying , if you have done all you can do you have to realize there sometimes is nothing you can do
  • Please don't let the baby sleep in the car seat out of the car! They are not meant for that and especially with little babies that young can't hold their head up and it constricts the airway. Which can lead to SUID and SIDS.
  • Sometimes baby cry just because they want human contact. Right now I'm reclining on the couch with my son sound asleep on my chest. He was crying before this. I tried feeding, burping, changing diaper, walking around the house, gripe water. Nothing worked. But as soon as I laid him on my chest, he calmed down and is now sound asleep! It could be the human contact or maybe he can hear the sound of my heartbeat and breathing just like when he was in the womb. Either way, it's comforting for him.
  • Update! I'm getting better at telling family that I refuse to let her cry. The funny thing is, they can't stand to let her cry when they are watching her too. She is also doing much better now that she's put on weight.
