Wine????

I am having contractions/bh approx 6 an hour for the last 2 hours. Doctor said hydrate really well and have a glass of wine, it calms down irritated uterus. Has anyone every heard that??? I am 35.4 weeks.

Re: Wine????

  • Ha! Never heard of this...but drinking water has always done the trick when I was experiencing lots of BH. That and relaxing with your feet up. But oh I can't wait for the day I can indulge in some vino!!

  • Nope. Just water and rest.
  • I feel like the answer is yes... but it just could be my knee-jerk reaction when the question is, "wine?"

    Haha! This!
  • Yes I saw this on the "what to do if you think you might be in labor" instructions that my midwife gave me, guess it's a way to tell the difference between bh and true labor but still I did a double take! Is it working lol??!
  • Yes I've done it in previous pregnancies. It helped. And tasted great ;)

To each her own, especially if your doctor says it's ok. I don't drink much when I'm not pregnant and I don't drink at all when I am.

My bh are not as frequent, so yes I think it has helped!
  • I had some wine with dinner tonight and it calmed my contractions too! A half of a glass did the trick for me! :)
  • I have heard this!! Ive always wanted to see if it would calm contractions, but i've never gone into labor on my own.
  • ha! I want your doctor as mine now lol, if the doc says its ok, then go for it! I would kill for a glass of moscato or wine zin right about now, it could definitely help my nerves right about now
  • In the booklet from my doctor about labor prep and BH it states the same thing. Rest, relax, take a bath, drink red wine, and lots of water.... dr's orders right lol
  • In l&d right now, I guess it didn't help after all.

Hope everything is going ok thinking of you and baby.
  • My sister is a L&D nurse and she was telling me that wine or beer used to be the "go to" to slow down or stop contractions before modern meds:-). Good luck to you this morning.

  • ha!  my doctors have never said this, but my mom has.  She told me over and over that when you start labor you should have a glass of wine!  Also that when you are nursing you should have a glass of beer every night.   My first doctor told me the beer one too, but most current doctors recommend other yeasty foods instead.

  • In l&d right now, I guess it didn't help after all.

Thinking of you mamma, hoping that baby stays put a couple more weeks!
  • So the doctor says the shots have slowed the progression and I am able to go home. We are going to eat and walk around a little and may get rechecked before going home to make sure it has stopped. The doctor said I could be back here tonight but it is a waiting game right now.
  • I feel like the answer is yes... but it just could be my knee-jerk reaction when the question is, "wine?"

    Ha ha ha! This!!!
  • Good luck to you, keep us posted
  • I hope everything calms down and you're able to go home for a few more weeks. Best wishes!

I have never heard that before. I wonder what it is in wine that would cause your uterus to relax? Or perhaps it's the placebo effect?
  • I mean... Wine is usually always a good idea. If your doc says yes, why wouldn't you? :-))
  • I am currently at home in bed. Still having contractions but they are not too crazy.
