Insomnia vs. Fatigue

First time mom here, only 5 weeks along. I am a nurse working 12 hour night shifts with a week on/week off schedule. Normally I have no issues sleeping (even during the day) but the last few weeks I've gotten the worst quality of sleep. I do nap during the day but have not been able to get more than 2 hours of sleep in a row. I go to bed around 7am, fall asleep around 9am, then wake up 11 and I just lay in bed until I can't stand it anymore. Everyone is talking about their extreme fatigue which I would almost wish for at this point. Any of you have tips for insomnia during the first trimester?

Re: Insomnia vs. Fatigue

  • I am in the healthcare field too with sporadic hours. I have been having both insomnia and fatigue which is an awful combination. I have been trying to keep my sleep hygiene as good as I can and that has helped i.e. going to bed at the same time every night, waking up at the same time every evening and NO screen time in bed. I would also avoid any naps if you want to be even better. Other than that, I am just surviving. :)

  • I was on an awful sleep cycle most of my last pregnancy , I could only sleep two hours at a time . I basically started treating myself like a baby and got On a routine; shower, snack, TV show, then bed time without my iPad/ phone ... Even if I laid there for a little while I was at least resting and the next day wasn't horrible.
