Constipation!

Ladies, I cannot take this anymore!!! I'm suffering so badly from it. I get hungry but am turned off from eating because I still feel full, it's horrible. What has helped you deal with constipation so far?

I'm trying to drink lots of water, stay away from salt and eat lots of fruits/veggies, but it isn't kicking in yet!

  • Prune Juice. My grandma swears it tastes better warmed up (and also says it works better), but I can only drink it cold.

  • Are you taking a prenatal with iron in it? The iron made me so constipated and miserable that I switched to a gummy prenatal with no iron. Obviously, if you're iron-deficient or anything you should stick it out with the iron, but my Dr said the iron isn't really that big of a deal as long as your body makes enough iron on its own and you have a semi-balanced diet.

Before I wised up to the prenatal thing (in my last pregnancy), I survived by taking a dose of Miralax every day. That helped a ton and is Dr approved.

Okay, lets get into some gross gory details here.....if you're grossed out easily, SKIP THIS POST!

I've dealt with IBS for 15+ years now. There's a trick to constipation & diarrhea that people sometimes don't understand.
I like to call it poop, just cuz it's a funny word. POOP. HAHA. Sorry if that's gross.

    Poop EVERY DAY!
Even if you're in the middle of the grocery store. If you feel like you might have to go, GO!!!
Don't make it wait. If you hold it and force it to wait...even for 30 minutes, moisture is absorbed out of it, making it harder...the longer you wait, the harder it becomes.

Drink lots of fluids when you're eating. In fact, drink a half glass before eating, wash down your food every few bites, then drink another half glass after eating. Your food needs the moisture to help it process. This makes me have to pee just thinking about it.

If you're already past the point of no return and everything is backed up, try having some ice cream! For alot of people, ice cream aggravates the bowels...which can make things pass easier...might be a bit crampy.

    Ok, here's the opposite spectrum....diarrhea.
I personally find diarrhea more uncomfortable than constipation. If it's that kind of day, just sit down. Wiggle your toes, grit your teeth, and bear it! In about 15 minutes, the discomfort will subside. Like I said, the longer you wait, the more moisture is being absorbed out of it changing it from liquid to solid.

Okay, maybe that was WAY more information than anyone wanted. SORRY!

  • Oh, one more thing....if you're prone to constipation, lay off the coffee & tea.
Caffeine is a diuretic which causes you to pee even more than you already are.... stealing precious hydration from your bowels!

  • I'm in a similar situation and have found prune juice to be a little helpful, and I took Milk of Magnesia over the weekend - that helped a lot.
  • if nothing else works taking metamucil can work. It is considered ok for pregnant woman

Thanks everyone! I should check to see if my PNV has iron. I was using gummies for a year, and switched to another brand that isn't gummy, and I like them (my nails and hair have been growing like crazy the past 6 months) but this problem has only been the last 6 weeks or little less since I'm pregnant. I'll try some of these suggestions!
  • I was having a lot of issues with constipation and my ob recommended I take colace. I have been taking it daily ever since and let me tell you, it was the best $4.50 I have ever spent!
  • I have these chewable fiber supplements--they taste almost like candy, so very palatable. I eat two or three daily and they tend to help within a day.

  • I increased my fiber intake to try and prevent this and I think it made it happen! Hoping it is just my GI tract getting use to it and then I will be good. *fingers crossed*

    BFP #2  12/22/15, EDD 9/1/16  :)
  • I started eating prunes in the morning and they have helped me a bit.  Avocado also helps me.  Hang in there, we are all going through it!

  • Buy the Fiber One bars, just don't eat more than 2 a day or you'll regret it. They come in yummy flavors, my kids LOVE them but I have to watch how many they scarf down. They even have gummy treats that taste way better than other brands. I personally love the lemon bar they make.
