Labor Question

So, I have a question for second time momma's about going into labor. With my DS I was induced and I'm wondering what to expect as far as how it feels when labor starts naturally. With my induction I had intense contraction that literally shook my whole body within the first hour of starting the pitocin. Is that how it is going into labor naturally? Or is it more progressive, starting with just uncomfortable contractions that get more intense over time? Sorry if this seems stupid, but I'm worried I won't know when it's time to go. I was sent to l&d for dehydration at 32 weeks and tested positive for preterm labor. When I got there I was apparently having contractions every 3 minutes and already dilated to a 4. I had no idea I was in labor until they told me. I felt like a complete dumbass.
Sorry this got so lengthy!

Re: Labor Question

  • For me, I had bloody show Friday afternoon, and period like cramping started around midnight. I went to the hospital around 6 am Saturday when my contractions were about 4 min apart. They didn't get intense until about 9 am when I was more dilated.

  • For all three of mine it started with just uncomfortableness.  With the first baby, I thought I needed to go to the bathroom and kept going to sit on the pot.  I even was in denial when I was having my contractions at 5 minutes apart.  I stated: I am not in labor, I just have bad gas pains!

With the 2nd, I started my contractions at 2 min. apart and they stayed that way until almost delivery time.  but they started mild and got more intense.

With the 3rd, I started my bloody show about the same time as the contractions.  The contractions were mild, but I had more back labor this time so I wasn't as unsure.

I dread the idea of induction, I think throwing you body into labor would be more painful than a slow progression.   I am holding out hope that this LO will come out on her own when she is ready.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! I'm just so paranoid that I'll have no clue it's real labor and end up having my baby on the toilet or something!
  • This is a great subject of a lot of birth books. My Bradley Birthing book breaks down different rhythms moms can have. One is the Speedster: contractions start fast and hard and just keep coming and labor is fast. Another is the putterer: small light manageable contractions for possibly days on end until they escalate. I'm not meaning to answer you with a read a book response, I just think you might appreciate the detail of different labor rhythms that the book goes into. It's really helped me realize that it can vary widely!

  • I will definitely be checking out the book. Thanks @emmacake08
  • Natural labor definitely starts out mild and gradually increases in intensity unlike pitocin contractions which can start out hot and heavy and just keep going.
