August 2015 Moms

swelling...

so ladies, offer me some personal experiences, how much swelling is too much swelling and how miserable are all of you August mommas?
My feet and calves feel like they are going to split open about an hour after I get out of bed in the morning.
I have to put shoes on right away (usually socks and shoes) or I can't get anything on my feet but my flip flops for work.
I am taking some pics to show my Doc on Monday, but I wondered what you all have been going through with swelling this pregnancy.
I keep trying to remind myself that August in Illinois is just hot and humid and causes swelling but I am tired of looking down at loaves of bread - oh wait I mean my feet that now look like loaves of bread :-P

both my ankle bones went missing last week before my last appointment and my doc acted like it was no big whoop. It comes and goes more so in my right ankle than my left. Its not really painful, but I've already switched to flip flops and my employer can kiss my A. She said just to prop them up at night when i get home, and just to make sure they don't get TOO BIG, whatever that means.
I did however have to have a ring cut off my finger last week. I didn't even notice how tight it was until somebody pointed it out.

  • At first my swelling only happened at the end of the day.  But for the past week, like you, as soon as I stand upright I feel like my feet turn into Frodo Baggins :/ It's miserable.
My hands are also swollen.  We celebrated our anniversary this weekend and my husband gave me a new band to add to my wedding ring...unfortunately, I can't wear any of my rings b/c they don't fit my sausage fingers.

I'm in Louisiana and the heat has been brutal and I'm sure that's playing a part. Ugh.

I love the Kiss my A comment.  I feel the same way!  ~also sorry about your ring, that sucks!

*edited because I only put half my comment up :-)

Frodo Baggins is a great analogy! I took my rings off at 6 months, just in case I got sausage fingers, which I do but only in the evenings for right now.

  • By the end of the day it is like I am walking on tree trunks. My doc was not concerned though given that my BP is good, I have no protein in my urine and am not dizzy/seeing spots. Talk about it with your doctor at  your next appt but if you are not showing any of the other bad signs, there is nothing to worry about.

  • I am with you! I have had a lot of swelling in my feet, ankles, and calves that gets worse the more sitting I do. It is extremely uncomfortable and makes me walk funny. I ended up contacting the doctor on my worst swelling day so far when I had been experiencing pitting for a number of days. Doctor was not concerned and suggested elevating feet, drinking tons of water, and making sure I get up to walk every couple hours at work. I will be so thrilled to fit in normal shoes again!

  • From what i hear swelling is mostly harmless unless there is an unproportional or sudden amount around your face. Obviously "sudden" is probably not good anywhere. Also, accompanied with high blood pressure, youd want to tell your Doc ASAP. My SIL had bad swelling and would go use the grocery store blood pressure machine ;)
  • my BP has been good, so I am not worried about pre-e right now.   I am enjoying the commiserating :-)

Then your biggest risk is probably dehydration. Swelling can be a sign of that! I know it's tough to get in huge amounts of water every day but it really does help.

Also suggest elevation on pillows (an excuse to kick your feet up!), high fiber foods, and compression socks.

I got my engagement ring off the other day but my wedding band shows no sign of moving anywhere.

  • I am in the same boat, so I feel for you!. My doctor just said drink as much water as I can, reduce salt intake, put my feet up if it gets too swollen and walk.

Unfortunately some days it seems like none of these things help when it's almost 100 degrees outside.

Luckily we are getting close to having these babies....yayyyy!
  • Mine is so bad. I feel for many of you ladies. My legs have full in edema, it's like I'm lugging around cement blocks. I went in Today to have my blood pressure taken - all is normal. Doc just said its part of pregnancy. This is just beyond painful and uncomfortable! Can't handle 5 more weeks of this! It does NOT go away over night.
  • Given that it is summer, I was expecting to start swelling earlier.  I really noticed it on Saturday when DH and I were out celebrating our anniversary.  Since then, I have tried to increase my water intake again even though I feel like I need to pee every hour on the hour.  I am also sitting with a huge pillow under my feet when I sit and sleeping with a pillow at my feet.

I swelled even worse during my last pregnancy and even for a couple of weeks after delivery.  The after-delivery swelling was even more uncomfortable and I am not looking forward to it.

  • My swelling has become extreme in the last couple of weeks. My doctor is monitoring me for preeclampsia due to elevated bp readings and other symptoms associated with pre e. Just make sure you keep an eye on it and monitor your bp, because things changed for me in the matter of a week.

Mine is disgusting and out of control. I have cankles like nobodies business. Beat thing you can do is be in water, 2nd best is to get on your left side, 3rd is to have them up. Good luck mama

after delivery swelling does not sound good.  FXFY that you don't have it this time!

  • I thought my swelling was just because of my severe sunburn but today I checked for pitting and my foot stayed pitted for a good while I'm more swollen on my left foot than my right. Thankfully I'm going to the dr on Friday. I'm half hoping they put me on short term disability so I don't have to work that night but then again I'm hoping it's nothing serious.
  • I saw that you are in Illinois, I am too and this week my swelling seems to be way worse this week.  I think the heat and humidity have made it worse.  However, my BP also keeps moving up so they are watching me.  But I was talking with a friend and she is in the same boat this week.

the weather here has been pretty humid and moderately hot.  I hope your BP is ok and you don't have to worry  about pre-e!
