Not vaccinating?

After doing a lot of research and weighing my options I've decided to delay my daughter's vaccinations until after age 2.

Anyone else? I don't wish to debate with anyone, just wondering if there are other July mommies who feel the same way :)

  • I feel ya on this. This is something that will automatically get you attacked by pro-vaccination folks and you can never have a right answer. We have decided not to go with full schedule (for instance, my newborn will not need protection against Hep B, a sexually tranitted disease) but will still be getting some important shots at an altered schedule
SAHM so daycare isn't an issue for us.

Will you also be homeschooling? Most school districts require most if not all vaccines before they can attend public/private schooling.
  • I am definitely going with all the big vaccines (but not ones like flu that are really a crapshoot) because i weighed the potential risks and probabilities. My daughter is much more likely to live a long and healthy life with vaccinations rather than without. I have faith in science. That said, to each their own.

  • Delaying ours as well! Our son is 14 months and hasn't had any. Neither will our daughter. You have plenty of support out there. This might not be the best forum for that. ;)
  • We will be doing all the vaccinations on schedule. My husband has chronic health issues that make some vaccines unsafe for him, so we don't have the luxury of everyone around out LO being vaccinated. I also work in healthcare and worry about what I might be exposed to.
  • I should clarify that I'm a SAHM so my baby won't be in daycare and I also plan to breastfeed her. I don't think all vaccinations are evil; I just want her to be a little bit bigger before she has any :)

I have two friends with vaccine injured children so it makes me a little cautious.
  • Yes, homeschooling is our plan.
  • Not judging.. If you chose not to vaccinate that's 100% your choice.

I personally chose to vaccinate, but these new ones they have out there.. Flu shots, H1n1, pneumonia vaccines... No.
  • No I vaccinate my kids at the suggested times. I don't agree with non vaccinating. But that's your choice. There's just too much that could happen without them. And put too many others in harms way. Just my opinion though.
  • I delayed vaccinations with my first but only by a couple months, then we spread them out a bit more than the normal. I just didn't want my infant bombarded with so much so soon. She will be two on Friday and will be completely caught up at her next appointment. I wish to do the same this time but my pediatrician closed her office and now I can't find one willing to work with me.

We did a modified schedule for our daughter because of potential allergies and interactions that I have had but skip it totally? Not a chance.

    Same here!
  • That is a terrible idea. You will likely have trouble finding a pediatrician who will go along with this. It sounds like your rexsearch was pretty biased.
  • I believe we will be following the routine vaccination schedule. I plan to do my homework and know what the risks, side effects, etc are but now there are so many diseases that are essentially eradicated because of vaccines so I for me I can't imagine completely skipping them altogether.
  • I will be vaccinating my son on the recommended schedule. I suppose it is your choice whether or not to delay vaccinations, but I wouldn't want to risk it myself. I've always found that the benefits outweigh any risks. I'm curious as to what you've found in your research that has led you to this decision.
  • Totally on board with you on this @caitlou22 ! I'm an Aussie living in Canada and couldn't get the whooping cough booster done in my 3rd trimester as it is not done here, but I certainly tried! Hearing about babies that die from preventable illnesses is so upsetting!
  • For those opting for a modified schedule, can you point me to some scientific/credible research to show that the current schedule for vaccines is some how detrimental to your child?

Curious to know if your choice is founded on science or just gut feelings.

  • I'll be getting mine vaccinated. But the allergic reactions terrify me. I have a hard time relaxing for about 24 hours after they get them.
  • Nope nope nope. No eye ointment, no hep b. Delaying everything until at least 2 or 3 and then will do a very modified schedule and pick n choose which ones. Luckily we found a pediatrician who isn't pushy at all.. Especially after I explained that I have done my research.
So many people that choose to follow the schedule do not educate themselves and just attack those who do with irrelevant arguments
  • @bridgitd It scares the crap out of me! And that sucks they aren't providing it in Canada.. Not only is it recommended for Mum here, but anyone who will be around the baby a lot.. It's very worrying! People that don't vac their babies against these kind of illnesses are the reason this stuff spreads around!! I'm usually an "each to your own" kinda person, but this subject actually infuriates me! And I am totally against anti-vac parents.. Sorry!

    have a read..

Kids die from not getting vaccinated. The reason these diseases don't really exist anymore is because of the fact that we get vaccinated. Honestly people really? Babies can't fight this stuff off without help. Whooping cough especially can be fatal and if your child is around another sick child you will be in for a reality check. This sounds like some kind of conspiracy theory.
  • @sutavim2 let me know when you find peer reviewed research supporting your "views" and not just links to some mommy-blog or webpage written by a doctor (so it must be credible because...the Internet!). People with views like you terrify me.

I had mine in the third trimester.  Perhaps it's just your doctor?
  • Just curious, what are your sources that you found that made you make the decision to hold off on the vaccinations?
  • @CanadaMom17 - asked my midwife and also the family doctor I see, as well as checked on the BC vaccinations website, so I don't know, but that's what I was told! Oh well, too late now I guess... I'm 4 days past my EDD!

For us the decision to delay wasn't about science or gut instinct exactly. And frankly what we did is technically a modified schedule which means that instead of doing shots that were three vaccines combined we did single shots of each one. What sucks about this approach is that our DD ended up at the pediatrician three or four times more in order to complete all the shots but she starts kindergarten in the fall totally up to date.

Our reasoning is that I have deathly allergies to various vaccine components and we didnt want the risk of not knowing which were safe and which weren't.

My husband is a scientist and there is no way based on factual evidence that we would ever have not vaccinated. We will not do flu shots but the major childhood illnesses we absolutely completed. I really tried to find a way to expose my daughter to chicken pox instead of doing the vaccine but we weren't able to and she had her first dose about a month ago.
