Meeting Milestones?

I'm a FTM and not fully clear on what milestones my baby "should" be reaching. I try not to "should" on myself too much, and I know every baby is different. At the same time, when I read about so many babies sitting up and having teeth and eating solids I worry a bit! My son doesn't sit up very well, he still needs a blanket in the bumbo to give extra support. He hates tummy time (thanks to a tongue tie) but can hold his head up well. He holds onto his hands a lot so he doesn't grab much, but is able to. He seems to use his feet more bc his hands are always holding each other or in his mouth! He's drooling like crazy and chews his hands. He doesn't seem to care for toys. He smiles and laughs and talks. He eats about every 3 hrs, around 4oz. He's bottle fed during the day while I'm at work and I nurse him while I'm with him, all breastmilk. He weighs just under 13 lbs, and just turned 4 months yesterday. ♡
What milestones are your babies hitting? Does this sound normal? Behind?

Re: Meeting Milestones?

  • There is no true normal. Babies develop differently...my little one has crazy muscle tone (I wish I had to be honest). She's had amazing head control since she was born. So she rolled over tummy to back at 6 weeks and back to belly at 12 weeks. She is scooting but not crawling yet. She likes to sit up but she isn't stable and she fights me to hold onto her. She is a determined little baby!!! However, my nephew who is 18 months didn't roll til he was 5 months and sitting alone happened much later for him. But now he is a happy and active 18 month old! I'm in a moms group and seeing people who are like. My baby stands but is still not very strong at sitting or my baby skipped crawling and started walking... Those make me realize that no matter what some babies just don't hit those milestones... Just trust that baby is developing perfectly!

  • @babyh310 You're baby sounds just like mine! He's 16 weeks and no sign of rolling and is a very unstable sitter.  He does have good head control, though, and has since he was born.  It's been kind of hard because everyone predicted he'd be early for all his milestones since he was able to hold his head up since birth and because he's so active.  He punches and kicks all day long!  But nope.  I just figure he'll do his thing in his own time.  He's got other things that I'm very proud of like he's a chatterbox.  If you're starting to compare, just take note of all the amazing things you're little one does do and know that your kid is special in their own way.
  • I think it's definitely different for every baby and unless you're missing every milestone there's nothing to worry about. My baby is 18 weeks and still hasn't really rolled over but can sit up alone no problem. If you're really concerned, talk to your pediatrician. I am sure they will reassure you that your baby is doing just fine!
  • My daughter is 17 months, 16 lbs 3 oz (95th percentile and in 6 month clothes already! Ah!), and has had great head control from birth. She rolled front to back at around 8 weeks, then decided rolling the other way was just unnecessary. She HATES tummy time. But she's recently really loved sitting with a Boppy or holding onto my hand (still pretty wobbly!). She's a thumb sucker, so doesn't put anything but her hands in her mouth most of the time. She does have some interest in toys. She's always been really expressive: smiling from birth (or just about), laughing, babbling. But that's just Lydia! I find it so difficult not to compare my LO with other babies around us, like her cousin who is 6 months older. Thankfully, when out LOs are older, we will look back on this first year or two amazed at how concerned we were about all those milestones and realize that it was totally unimportant. (Not that we can't celebrate those milestones now, of course!)
  • Sounds like your baby is developing just fine :) As PPs have mentioned (and as I think we see from the milestones met by each poster's babies so far), every baby develops at his or her own pace, in varying ways, and to varying degrees. I think you are absolutely right to try not to "should" yourself too much though it sure is hard not to compare to other babies!! My DS is 16.5 weeks and, like many others, has had great neck control from birth. I'm pretty certain he's currently teething (though nothing good cut through yet), and has recently started to sit with support (mostly on me). However, he hasn't rolled over himself yet, and I don't think is at all ready for solid foods. I do find though that his development has recently started to change almost overnight. This week he started to grab his feet and roll from his back onto his side. He previously hated tummy time too but last week, as if a switch turned on, he has started to 'play' with toys and I think has discovered it's easier to put them in his mouth when he's on his tummy... I dare say he enjoys it now! It's amazing how quickly time is flying by for us, though it's important to remember that they're still itty bitty and every week our babies are experiencing changes and development - even if they're not recognized 'milestones' like a new facial expression or fart noises with his mouth - and that provides me with reassurance :)
  • I have two, and they have been soooooooo different! Don't worry too much :)
5 months, this one had 3 teeth. My first got her first tooth at six months
My older one loved tummy time, this one hates it.
My older one didn't sleep through the night until over a year old. This one has since 3 months.
As long as your baby is growing and progressing all should be ok :)
  • I been wondering the same thing. My daughter is 21 weeks and is showing no signs of wanting to roll over. She hates tummy time but hold her head up well. I worry she's behind.
  • You can always ask the doctor if you are worried, If your LO is behind they will tell you if they need intervention or if they will catch up. FWIW, my pedi would always say "he'll do it by kindergarten" whenever I asked about milestones.
  • My 5 month old can sit up by himself for short periods of time but will not roll over and hates tummy time. It's crazy
  • I wouldn't worry too much, every baby is different. My daughter is now 5 months old. She's been rolling for the past 6 weeks, sits up on her own for a good 15/20 seconds and is on solids twice a day. She's also on the verge of being able to craw (after getting her hair off multiple times about being on her belly and not being able to go anywhere!). A friend of mine has a little boy and he was born 2 days before my DD and he's not reached half the milestones my daughter has. He's not rolling, he's on 3 solid meals a day and no sign of him sitting in his own or attempting to crawl. My daughter is very active and is on the move 24/7 whereas my friends little boy is more relaxed and comfortable and he seems very happy the way he is! They will all reach their miles stones when their ready, I wouldn't worry at all :)
