Cystic hygroma at 12 wks

i had my 12 wk ultrasound today and my husband and I were disappointed (and terrified and upset and worried and every other emotion one can list) to hear that the ultrasound revealed a larger neck measurement than expected. The dr said this could be indicative of a cystic hygroma. I've been referred to the hospital for further testing. I didn't get any measurements- I didn't think to ask I was literally in a state of shock and confusion after just having this amazing US watching our baby move like crazy and my husband point out that the baby has his nose. This news of a possible CH was just devastating. The dr didn't explain much about it but made it seem terrible and so of course I had to google it and the web is no help to easing my concerns. I read that 30% of the time the condition resolves itself but I don't know what's accurate. Does anyone have helpful info (websites, Medical research, personal experiences)... Anything where we might find some comfort during this endeavor?? My husband and I are praying that in our follow up appt things go well- we can't lose hope. Thank you all!

Have they referred you to genetics? My first daughter had a large cystic hygroma which was caused by a genetic defect and passed at 18 weeks. That's not always the outcome though. Best of luck!

  • Yes they referred me to the hospital to have a more in depth ultra sound done and possible CVS genetic testing
  • I heard back from the Dr today- I'm scheduled to meet with the genetics counselor tomorrow morning followed by the CVS procedure. Has anyone had this done? Is it painful?

I had it done with my first pregnancy. It's a little painful but very quick. LMK if you have more questions.
