Re: Chicken pox

  • Oh no!  I don't have any advice or experience with this, but sending good thoughts your way to you and baby. xoxo

  • I don't know anyone who has been pregnant with chicken pox, and while there are potential complications the risks appear to be fairly low assuming you can be as healthy as you can be while sick.

I had the chicken pox when I was younger after getting stitches and I feel for ya. They suck. :(

I had chicken pox in high school--it was annoying but not terrible. I hope it's no worse for you!

  • Yikes! So sorry you are dealing with this right now. I imagine your OB will monitor you closely and everything will be fine. Hopefully you will not have a bad case of the pox... Some people just report very minor symptoms. Feel better and try not to scratch!
  • Oh gosh!'I hope you feel better soon! I'm sure you'll be in and your LO- I've heard of pregnant women having shingles and those are much worse so you should be ok if you can survive the itching! Isn't it amazing to think that our children will never have to have it! Good luck!

Hi.  I had a recent chicken pox scare (was around a 3 yo who ended up breaking out in it the next day).  Since I knew ahead of time I was at risk my ob was great and was able to get me a prophylactic drug but it was an ordeal.  I'm still waiting to see if I break out myself though (it doesn't always work). If you haven't spoken to your ob, please talk to him/her. They should be able to tell you more about it.   From what I learned when we were going through that it's not going to be fun but doesn't need to be gloom and doom.   I read and my ob said that at this stage in pregnancy (I went through this talk at around 19 weeks) there is a slight risk that the baby might be a scarred from infection but there's a 98% chance that he/she will be completely fine and normal.  The bigger issue I think is taking care of yourself so you can provide for the baby--make sure you're hydrated and go to the hospital etc if you have to early on if you start feeling really bad.  This is not a time to suck it up-they have IV fluids and antiviral drugs that can help in severe cases.  Hopefully it will be relatively mild for you though.  If you do end up googling stuff keep in mind that a lot of what's out there on chicken pox and pregnancy is about getting it in the 3rd trimester when there's actually a lot more risk to the baby than there is at this time.  Good luck and hang in there.
  • Sorry, I just realized that it didn't exactly answer your question.  I unfortunately don't know anyone who has had it.  I guess I just wanted to give you hope that my OB said to me that around 98% of babies of mom's getting it in the second trimester come out completely fine.  Plus, don't believe all the googling because your situation is different and should be better than it is for moms getting chicken pox later in pregnancy.
  • Hi ladies thank you so much for your kind words, I've been too sick to get on any earlier to thank you. So the risk on bub is 1-2% which is pretty low but still there. I've started on some meds and got given a shot of immunoglobulin this morning all to prevent it passing to Bub so fingers are crossed, we have caught it super early so only time will tell. We had our anatomy ultrasound on Monday and all was perfect, having another one in a couple of weeks to check the growth of bub etc from these chicken pox. Feeling better overall with not as much aching but my goodness I am itchy!! Thanks again for your kind words.

Actually you answered it very well and gave me much needed hope so thank you!!
  • Hi hope you feel better soon. I just wanted to say when I had them I soaked in oatmeal baths and it really helped with the itching. Good luck and feel better soon!!
  • Thank you @courtney198078 I will definately give that a go!!
  • Yes! Oatmeal baths! Run them through your food processor to make a fine powder. It seems like it dispersed in the water better.
