Routine for baby

I am trying to figure out a good routine for my 7 week old. So far I have been way too reactionary but now I think she's almost at the point that a routine would be recognized and helpful. Not a set schedule, just a general routine for the day.

Do you have routines that are working well for you and your little ones that you wouldn't mind sharing? I would love some ideas!!!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Routine for baby

  • Found this online and have been trying it loosely for the last few weeks and our LO is doing well with it!
We mainly have a set routine at bedtime. We change into a sleeper, change diaper, feed, swaddle, shut blinds, cut our voices and noise down.

I only have a routine around bedtime. At 9 he gets a bottle, new diaper, swaddle then down. He is sleeping about 6 hours. I wait for him to wake up, then changed his diaper, feed, and straight back to bed. When he gets up around six or seven then we get out of bed and start the day. I feed him every 3/4 hours during the day.

My DD is also 7 weeks. During the day she eats for about 40 mins, we change her diaper then play for about 40 mins (this is usually a combo of tummy time, play mat with mobile, singing, reading or just talking to her) then she sleeps for about an hour to an hour and a half and then wakes to eat again and the cycle starts over. Around 8 PM we do the same thing but cut out the play time. I read Secrets of the Baby Whisperer which helped me to understand her cues and get into the routine. I definitely recommend the book and you really only need to read the first few chapters in order to understand how the authors suggested routine works.
  • Why does that chart say not to change diaper at night?

I was wondering the same thing. My kid will overflow a size 2 if I don't change him at night.

Eventually they will likely stop pooping at night, just peeing. And the diapers are so absorbant, it's believed there is more harm to waking them for a change than there is in letting them stay in a peed-in diaper.

ETA: I just learned this from the Lucie's List newsletter. Highly recommend it.
  • I can't NOT change him........ It weirds me out.
You are probably right @virginiaunicorn11 but I can't do it!
  • @klkonwi Ditto! I meant I recommend the newsletter. Haven't tried not changing LO at night, though he is definitely transitioning to no poop at night. It's hard enough for me not to wipe him when he pees. Feels wrong.
  • Shoot, changing the diaper is how I get her to wake back up and eat on the other side...so my boobs don't explode and so she'll sleep longer!
  • I always change LO at night only because I need it to wake her up in between boobs. I feel like I'm dream feeding her even though I'm not trying to...ha! She's definitely transitioned to no poop at night. Her last poop is usually at like 4pm and she doesn't poop again until 6am.

  • We go for a walk every morning after we eat breakfast, take an early morning nap and then eat again. Then we sit on the porch and hangout until he's ready to eat again. Makes the day go by happier and quicker. Dad comes into play more after dinner so they have their own routine kind of. He can make LO fall asleep at night super easy

Thanks everyone for the info!! Janit my routine so far is more like yours with the walk and afternoon outside time. I am trying to get the baby whisperer routine but I keep finding it hard to do the active after eating because she falls asleep with the bottle. If I wake her and have her be active then I miss the nap window and it's awful!! Trying to head towards "EASY" though but it's easier said than done for me at least so far.

I read this on LL too but my LO won't stand for a dirty diaper... Sigh. So I change her most overnight shifts unless I think she's too sleepy to notice.
  • I also find I have to do a diaper change during night feedings to wake my LO up to switch sides.

I think as long as you keep the same routine you will be fine. With my boys, I did sleep, play, eat and then sleep again. My boys always slept after their bottle.

  • @laurendutch haven't seen you post in awhile!!!! Missed you!!!
  • Our little lady is 7 weeks old too and she kind of set her own routine, but here it is: she eats her last big meal somewhere from 9-10ish at night give or take a bit, then she is up to eat again at 3:30, then up again around 7-8. After that we're 'up for the day' and I usually open the curtains so it's light out and bring her down to the living room. She naps about 3 times a day evenly spaced out. The biggest thing that has helped us is making sure her belly is nice and full before she sleeps, key at night. Before she was snacking - and ounce or two and then would wake up every hour or so. If I make sure she eats 4-5 ounces she sleeps solid for a bit. Also I know you've probably heard it a thousand times but light really does effect them! At night when it's time for bed the lights go out and the room gets dark. We turn on our fan or we have a small bunny that makes 'soothing' sounds. When it's time to wake up I open the curtains, turn on the lights, TV etc. she's getting pretty good at going to sleep, if we put her in her bassinet as make it dark she will usually fall asleep herself! During the day I let her nap when she pleases, she's still little!
