OB Vacation...

almost 38 weeks and I just now find out my OB is on vacation for 10 days over my due date... Ugh.

  • Thanks, that makes me feel better :-)
  • As for appointments, she will probably only be out for one. This will give you an opportunity to meet another OB from the practice (who might deliver your baby)

Of all of my friends who have had babies (quite a few), I only know one who had their actual OB deliver their baby and it was a scheduled C-Section. My OB did not deliver my DS and I am not expecting her to deliver DD either - it is a rotation and you get who you get from the practice depending on when you go into labor. I know it stinks, but once you are in the moment, you honestly won't care who delivers your baby as long as they get them out! I wouldn't stress it.

    This.

  • Mine is too on vacation, but I don't honestly care.  For me, I think the bigger concern is making sure I get my last prenatal care.  With my main doctor gone, its actually harder to get in.

I don't want to be stranded like a week overdue with no one who can even schedule an induction when it gets to the point it might harm my baby.

  • That's crazy!! My OB is ALWAYS on call for his patients and he delivers all of them except on Sunday's, then it is the doctor on rotation, which there are only 3 or 4 including my doc! But I am also from a small town!!! I drive 45 mins to be co managed by a doctor for my liver and they just do an ultrasound each month then I see a doctor. I have a specific doctor that I see if something is wrong but if not I have seen a different doctor every single time! (Over 20 OBs in this hospital)
  • Mine didn't deliver my first. And I'm kind of glad she didn't lol. I clicked more with the OB that was on call and delivered my baby at 4am. She was awesome!
  • My doctor is due 7 days after I am with her second baby. She may not be the one to deliver my baby either. Can't even stress about it.
  • I'm in a rotation situation, too, so whomever is on call will deliver our baby. Fine by me - there is one doc I don't want, she performed surgery on me several  years ago and I don't like her, but it's out of my hands. From what I understand, the nurses play a much bigger role during delivery anyway, and I've been told they are awesome at my hospital.
  • This happened to me last time, my ob went on family medical leave the last month of my pregnancy (I don't know what happened). At the time I was annoyed because she was the only one at the practice who I felt like I really cliqued with and was down to earth with me, honestly the others kind of scared me with their lack of bedside manner. But when it came down to it the nurses are what really effects your delivery experience. I had a c/a and can't even tell you what the Drs name was or what she even looked like! Lol and looking back I realize I was just being a hormonal 9 month pregnant women for being upset about my dr being on leave. She is obviously entititled to that like anyone else is!

I used the same ob this time... And she is going on vacation to North Carolina the whole week of my due date lol! She is supposed to be back 3 days after my due date. I have a c/s scheduled with her a week after I am due incase this baby doesn't try to come on her own via vbac attempt. Kinda bummed she might not be delivering me if I have a vbac, but at the same time she only would be if she was the on call ob for rotation that day anyway.

I have a similar situation. There is 1 doc in the practice that delivered my last DD and left part of the placenta. I got a horrible infection and ended up having and in office Procedure that didn't work, took abortion pills to expel it, that didn't work, and eventually ended with having to have a second surgery to remove it. I HATE the idea of her ever touching me again, but because she is a partner in the practice, I am not allowed to refuse her if I want to keep my current OB, whom I love!! I am doing my best to be sure I don't go into labor when she is on-call. I have a scheduled c-section withy doc, and I pray I make it!!

  • My OB is also on vacation the week of my due date so my check-up is scheduled with a different OB.

I got lucky during my first pregnancy and had the same OB deliver me because she just happened to be on call that day.

That OB has been out of the country for my entire second pregnancy though and I'm on my 3rd OB now! All of the OBs at my hospital are female and seem to be good so I don't care too much at this point.

Wow! Talk about a malpractice suit!! I would not have gone back to that practice if it were me. That is scary. Good luck with this delivery. I would request a copy of my medical records after this delivery!
  • That's the one benefit of a scheduled c section! lol. The first thing they asked me when scheduling is which doc I preferred. There are 6 delivering doctors in my practice. Of course if anything happens before my c section I'll be dealing with whatever doc is on at that time. There's 2 that I would prefer not to have, but if that's who I get I'm sure it will all be fine.
  • I'm in a rotation situation too. And actually because I've had a very easy pregnancy, I've been rotating through them during my appointments so I have gotten a chance to meet almost all of them. There are a couple that I would prefer not to have deliver my baby, only because I didn't really like them personality wise. I'm sure they're completely competent though. As PP said, we'll spend far more time with the nurses on duty anyway.
  • With my first my doctor tried to plan an extended weekend (to take her kids to Disney Land) around when all her ladies were due. She took three days off (Fri, sat, sun) and missed eight ladies give birth! Four of us went late and four went early. Her poor sub had a very busy weekend!

She let me know in the beginning this time that she didn't have a vacation around my due date :)

It wasn't weird having a different doctor for the delivery. I honestly have no idea which other doctor it was who delivered my doctor though I know she works with my doctor and I met her at least twice. I didn't really care who was there at a certain point - just as long as progress was being made!
  • My OB is on vacation right now (I'm 38 weeks tomorrow) and he is on vacation starting on my due date. Doesn't give me a very big window. I would prefer he deliver because I work with him so I know him personally, but listen...when the time comes I don't care if a homeless person off the street delivers me! The nurses are really the ones that do all the work anyway. ;)
  • My office has on call rotation too. They make sure to schedule some of your appointments with the 2 other doctors so you at least know them. My doctor is on vacation the week before my EDD. Of course I would prefer my doctor, but I just want a safe delivery, so it is what it is really.
  • Mine was on vaca last week and I'm so glad we made it until she got back. I'm a scheduled csection and so glad I'm very likely to have her deliver, she's such a calming presence. I would be much more anxious if I had to have a random dr when surgery is involved.
  • Rotation here as well, except with midwives. The midwives deliver and the OBs do the c-sections and have to be present at the high risk deliveries. Thankfully, all 3 midwives at my practice are fantastic!

That's why I chose a big practice. They all know me and someone from that practice is always on call and not some random doctor from another practice that doesn't know me or my case at all.
