Frustrated about work... Rant... Kinda long

i finished school for the dental field in June, but while in school I have been working as a waitress. I have waited tables for 5-6 years now and it's just so simple and easy to me. Last week I had a fall down my stairs. Everything was okay and baby was fine. I was taken off work until Wednesday. Well my boss decided to take me off all last week. I was kind of annoyed but I figured I would take the week off and relax and hang out. Sunday I called because I am normally the person who opens Monday through Friday.... I called to make sure I worked Monday and they have me off the schedule again. They won't let me come back to work. They didn't fire me per say. But they won't schedule me and they won't approve any shifts I try to pick up. I have a job already set for after the baby in an orthodontist office but that doesn't leave me with any income for this last month.... My husband isn't worried since he is the "bread winner" but we just ordered new furniture and new floors for two rooms of the house!!!! I would have never done that if I would have known my income is cut off for the next month. I'm just bummed and I really don't feel like just sitting at home for a month. Ughhhhhh

  • What is their logic? Do they just need a Dr's note clearing you?

  • I would speak with HR. Your doctor has cleared you right? If so, this seems pretty discriminatory.

  • My hospital excuse cleared me as of last Wednesday... They said they don't want me on my feet. It's an Italian restaurant and we do a lot of wedding and stuff too and I do a let of setting up for them, nothing hard at all, but a lot of walking and being on feet for awhile. But I am used to it and I know my body better than anyone. I am also currently waiting for a liver transplant so I understand signs that my body isn't normal and needs a break.... I'm just annoyed.
  • It's not a huge deal and it's not going to break the bank. Like I said, It's just waiting tables but it's just annoying and I don't have an HR person unfortunately, I have an owner and he's the one who took me off, it's just two restaurants that he owns in my town and a town next to me... So really there is nothing I can do.
  • I would tell him it isn't his decision if you are on your feet, if you and your Dr are okay with it, that is all that matters. Otherwise I would try to collect unemployment and he will have to pay.
  • I'm just worried about burning bridges. Holiday times I could work and make 600-800 dollars a week... It's just great money during Christmas time lol
  • They shouldn't mind you collecting unemployment - I would tell them you're filing a claim and go for it.
  • Do they know you want to work? My husband did this to me last week but then I picked up 2 shifts this week. If it is a small business and you work closely with the owner he/she probably feels responsible for your health and is doing what they think you want/is best. I would talk to them and say you are able and willing to work. Let them know that you don't want to burn bridges but you will have to file for unemployment since you were planning to work this last month.
