Nervous about numbness in hands

edited July 2015 in August 2015 Moms
I got a spinal done on 7-11 for my C-section and I noticed ever since about 3 days ago, I wake up and my hands feel like they fell asleep. The get so numb I can hardly pick up the baby. Then, through the day it comes on and off. Pins and needles and then numbness. I read up on it and quite a few women have experienced this after a spinal. Then again, it could be totally unrelated. It is just strange. Anyone else go through this? I'm waiting for my OB to call back but in the meantime I thought I would ask.

Re: Nervous about numbness in hands

  • I wonder if it is just swelling causing you to have carpal tunnel...?

  • If it's any consolation, I've had some swelling (haven't given birth yet, no spinal yet, etc.) and I wake up with tingly hands. I think it's the body dealing with the blood volume or something, because it's usually worse on the side I'm not sleeping on.
  • Still pregnant here and no advice related to spinal but just wanted to say I feel for you. I'm having exact same issues and can definitely see where it would be hard to pick up baby. Good luck to you!
  • I haven't delivered yet and have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel in my hands because of the swelling. Tingly, achy feeling in my hands most of the day. It is much worse in the mornings. I have no strength in my hands and if I try to loft something heavy or open a new bottle of juice then they get tingly. Hoping that's all it is for you too!

I have carpel tunnel and I had it with my first as well. It didn't go away for a few weeks after birth as well. I'm hoping your issue is as simple as this. GL!

Is it possible that it's carpal tunnel?
  • Same here I also had a c section on 7/11
  • Same numbness on hands
  • I had this with my first after my c section and I was convinced I was having a stroke. I think it's the amount of fluid that they pump into you and hormones adjusting. It got better about 3-6 weeks after the c section

  • Crazy. I've had a spinal before and never experienced numbness of the hands. I would definitely bring it up with your doc.

I didn't have a spinal but 34 weeks pregnant and hands / arms have been numb / asleep every night and morning for the past 2 weeks. Dr said it was just pregnancy induced carpal tunnel from all the excess fluids these days. Hopefully you get answers from your dr soon!
  • I have carpal tunnel too it's bad and can be very painful. I had it with my other two pregnancies too it can be very Bad after my second it never totally went away. Hope things get better for u soon.
  • Thank you for all the responses ladies, I was sure that they damaged me forever with the spinal lol! but it has nothing to do with that. Talked to the OB today and he said it is carpal tunnel due to pregnancy. He said it should resolve itself but if not there is always surgery down the line but he seemed pretty confident that this is very common and will go away with time.
