Wake a sleeping baby?

My LO has trouble taking naps. She is more of a cat mapper. When I finally do get her to sleep longer she will sometimes sleep three hours maybe even more. So she either cat naps or deep slumbers! I spend so much effort trying to get her to nap that when she does nap for a long time I wonder if I should wake her or let her be. I hear naps longer than 2.5 hours aren't good for their sleep schedule but I wonder if she really needs it to make up for the cat napping. Thoughts??

  • My 7 week old is the same way. She sleeps really well at night though so I am not concerned. Most days she cat naps and the times she does have a long nap, I wake to feed her after about 4 hours. Not sure if that's the right way or not but it works for us! At first I was stressing about her naps but after I put away the parenting books I became much happier!
  • I wake my daughter after 2 hours during the day. I want her to save her REM sleep for night time. But my daughter also had her day/nights comfused

@laurendutch this is probably a really silly question, but how did you know your daughter had her days and nights mixed up?
  • As my LO hit about 7 weeks she started to only cat nap during the day too. Makes for long days but nights have been better!

Same here. I feel like DS1 switched to catnaps during the day at about this time and extended night sleep to 3-4 hours, then after another 5-6 weeks consolidated the daytime sleep again so I am trying to let LO do what he wants. I think we gradually switched to 2 long (2-3 hour) daytime naps with DS1 around 6 months. He was a poor napper until then.

  • My 7 week old only cat naps for like 20-30 minutes at most during the day. Sleeps for 3-5 hour stretches at night. Works for us right now b

  • It is kinda ruining my ability to nap during the day though. Boo to that!

I actually just asked the pedi today about napping/ sleeping since LO wants nothing to do with daytime and evening naps (4 weeks old) and only sleeps about 10-12 hours total. She said some babies sleep- some don't just wake them if they go too long without food (even though I think that if they are hungry enough they will wake themselves) good luck!

My LO is 3 weeks. I was told to wake her after 3 hours from the start of her last feeding from the pediatrician and the lactation consultant. I was told once she hit her birth weight, let her wake by herself at night (which is usually between 2-4 hours depending on the night)

During the day she sometimes won't wake up. I can change her diaper, use a cold washcloth, and she will sleep right through it. I mentioned that to both the pediatrician and LC and they both said "well, you try and then try again in a half hour". So some day naps end up being 4 hours from feed to feed.
  • During the day I try to wake LO after 2 hours if I can, so she'll sleep better at night. Generally she naps on me during the day, so at the 1.5-2 hour mark I'll transfer her to the boppy lounger and that usually gets her to wake up within 20-30 minutes. If she's had a rough patch and a long awake time though sometimes I'll let her go to 3 hours. I won't force her awake because she's more likely to get cranky that way...but the transfer usually does the trick.
