Painless cervical check

I have seen a lot of posts about painful cervical checks. I just wanted to share that I had one yesterday and have had no pain, contractions, or any ill effects whatsoever. Also had the Group B Strep swab. I'm sorry for those who had such a rough time, but wanted to let others know that it isn't always the case. I don't think my midwife did anything special- it was just luck of the draw.

Re: Painless cervical check

  • I just turned my 36 week check down. I knew it might not cause irritation but I just didn't feel like chancing it. My OB didn't care, said it wouldn't indicate much anyway. Glad yours went well/not uncomfortable!

  • I had the same experience when my OB checked/swabbed me last week. But this time this morning, it was a little painful. I'm not sure if it's because she swabbed first last time and that helped with lubricating or maybe she was just more rough this time.
I had light spotting both times and mild cramping this time. Curious to see if you have the same experience the next time you get checked!

  • I've had painful ones and I've had ones I couldn't even feel. I compare it to getting your blood taken. Sometime people are just gentler/rougher at it then others.
  • My ob doesn't even do the cervical checks until 39 to 40 weeks. Is that unusual? I asked about it at my checkup yesterday and she said it's just unnecessary and could expose you to bacteria, not to mention being uncomfortable. Can't say I was disappointed in not getting one!!
  • My OB will ask if I want one, but I always turn them down. They don't care either way. It doesn't really tell you much unless you are showing signs of labor.

Same for me! I had mine yesterday and other than a little discomfort for about half hour or so afterward, I was fine! I was so nervous after hearing all the horror stories, I just knew I was going to be miserable. Luckily, I was no more miserable than normal :)
  • I had one last week for the first time and had no cramping or bleeding. But since my check this morning I have been spotting and cramping. I am not sure if it has anything to do with me being dilated this time and none at all last week or maybe because this dr was rougher... I am not really sure!
  • I've had 3 checks now, one each week since 35 weeks, in preparation for my induction. I've had absolutely no problems and this week was the first time I was open 1 cm. Maybe it's because my doc has extremely tiny hands and she has me prop my fists under my bottom to raise my pelvis.

  • Mine have not been painful ever either. I think it depends on how gentle the touch of your OB is.
Now i say that and my next one will probably be excruciating, but keeping my fingers crossed none the less
  • Today was my 3rd check and none have been painful. I did spot after the first one but that's been 3 weeks ago and I haven't since.

  • I had a check today and I was so nervous about it! To the point that my hands AND feet were sweating lol. It turned out to not be that bad, just kind of uncomfortable. It doesn't last long either. I may have just built it up in my mind that it was going to really hurt so it was a nice surprise that it didn't.

My doc said the same thing. He starts at 38 weeks if you want one.

Mine was 37 weeks, I don't see the point in having one earlier, unless there is a legitimate medical reason.
