Dr. "predicted" gender at 10w exam?

I'm just wondering if any other ladies out there had this experience during an ultrasound and if it was an accurate 'guess' from your Dr.
My doctor has been in practice 20+ years and told me during our exam that there is a certain way the genetalia tilts when it is just beginning formation that tells you what the gender may be. He told me it looks like it MAY be female but not to hold him to it. Just some additional info, he was also my cousins doctor through her 3rd pregnancy and he 'guessed' her baby would be a boy, and he turned out to be correct. I'm just anxious to know the gender I believe, and I won't be disappointed at all, boy or girl I have been blessed with this baby either way, I just think it's cool and wonder if any of you women had a doctor 'predict' gender in this way and if your doctor was right or wrong.

  • You won't know 100% until your baby is born.
  • It's possible if you believe in the nub theory. I suppose a trained doctor might be able to tell at this point but who knows

Or if you get genetic testing.

  • At 10 weeks it's still just a guess.  There's still a very good chance it's a boy.  I wouldn't go getting your hopes up about a girl or buying all the pink things just yet.
  • My doc did this with our son. Told us at an ultrasound around 12 weeks that she was doing this for however many years and it was 99% likely a girl. At our 20 week anatomy scan we found out it was a boy. So while it's exciting to hear the guesses, it really just isn't guess!

  • Your doctor couldn't possibly predict the gender as your lo won't even know for quite a few years.

  • Way too early. I had an us at 13 weeks and my ob swore up and down it was a boy. I told her I didn't believe it yet. Sure enough, it was a boy. However, I think it was coincidence.
  • Differentiated fetal sex organs BEGIN to develop ~9wks based on what I've read (before that they look the same).  They are fully formed ~16-18wks.  So in theory it is possible that at 10, 11 or 12 wks an experienced doctor might have an educated guess that is better than 50/50 because there is *something* different there - but I would think that would depend largely on the clarity of the u/s, the position of the baby and a very keen and experienced eye... so yes, people have had guess be right, I'd even be willing to say it might be better than 50/50, but I wouldn't put money on it or start buying pink/blue until a later u/s or genetic testing...  just my 2 cents

  • I asked my ultrasound technician at the NFT if she could tell (at 12 weeks) she said she was leaning toward boy but it could have also been the umbilical cord and it was too early to tell. I'm looking forward to in a few weeks when we can tell on the anatomy scan.
I did read about the nub theory though, you should read about it. But, keep in mind, it's called a "theory" for a reason.
