Any NICU RNs that are mom's out there?

Hi guys I'm a FTM with an EDD of Mar 3rd. I go in for my first US on wed. I think once I see/hear the heart beat I'll be better. I'm usually a calm person but there are moments where my anxiety gets crazy and I honestly think it's because I've seen to much go wrong. What I'm wondering is how you as a NICU RN and mom tried not to worry so much about things that can go wrong and focus on the joy of it all?

Re: Any NICU RNs that are mom's out there?

  • I'm interested to see who else replies and how they dealt too - I'm a FTM as well just coming up on 5 weeks along and I'm a pediatric resident. Sometimes my mind really gets away from me when I think about all the kids I've seen in the nicu but also later on like in picu. I pray for a healthy baby but I'm glad for nicu nurses like you who will help take care of us if it doesn't go according to plan.

  • I am not a Nicu RN but speaking as the mom of a Nicu baby, I have been very worried that because of my last pregnancy that this one will have the same result or worse. I just think about all the healthy babies out there and I pray. Sorry I don't have better advice. I'm sure you of all people know that Nicu nurses are a special breed and that you help do some amazing things with these special babies, so thank you. :) Because of people like you, I have a healthy 4 year old.

  • I am not a NICU nurse, but my son was in the PICU at 4 weeks old and have been in and out of the hospital for the 3 years following his massive stroke bc of an undetected coarctation of the aorta ( he was in a NICU for 4 days after his birth).  I had seen many issues by being there for so long.  I went on to have a happy and healthy little girl.  While I was pregnant with her, my thoughts were if anything were wrong we were much better prepared to handle it and know what to look for.  You have an amazing skill set as a NICU nurse to know if something is wrong and know how to deal with it, not easy to separate yourself, but hope for the best and you will be able to be the best advocate for your children should they have any issues (I certainly hope they don't).  I hope that helps a bit from another mom!
