10+ months of pregnancy

Approaching 20 weeks, the thought of another 5-5 1/2 months of pregnancy feels like forever!!! All the "9 months" media references to pregnancy that are ingrained in our culture set us up for thinking pregnancy is so much shorter than it actually is. This morning, I'm incensed by it!

Ok, this annoys me too, but not because it's 10 months of pregnancy. My mom told me it was actually 10 months so I did the math. Saying it's 10 months assumes there are exactly 4 weeks (28 days) in every month of the year. Not true. So while yes, it may be a little more than 9 months, it really only gets to 10 full months if you're more than 2 weeks past your due date.

I hope that makes you feel a little better!

  • Well, most people don't really count the first month because the 10 months is based on you LMP.  Although you have had your period and your pregnancy cycle has begun, you haven't really conceived and implanted for two to three weeks after your period.

That's why I just go by the week system......I find it annoying when you ask women how far along they are and they use "months"  That could be a four week difference!

  • Interesting @mbhurst1, when I say the week 85% of people are like "wha?" So I've been using month.

I think part of it is a function of living in Southern California. I know a lot less people here who've been pregnant. People seem to procreate later in life here.

When I go to my company headquarters in Minnesota, I can usually get away with saying weeks. Same with my Ohio friends.
  • My last 3 pregnancies didn't give me much trouble. MS got old quick though. I felt like labor couldn't come fast enough once I got to 36 weeks. With this pregnancy I have no MS, but I'm considered extremely high risk because of my age and it's twins and the risk of GD again. I was tested last week for it at 15 weeks, don't know the results yet. Just keeping these lil ones in there every day and doing my best to eat as much protein and fiber as I can is stressful enough. I have to go to perinatal specialist every 2 weeks and my regular OB every 3 weeks. So I feel like I'm always at the Drs. office or wiped out on the couch. I say all that to bring up the point that even though it feels like heck now, the time really does fly by and soon enough pregnancy will be distant/ fond memory.
  • With my first I conceived in January and gave birth in November (16 days late). That's 11 months! At the end, when I was enormous and uncomfortable and totally fed up, I wanted to punch people who said I was 9 months pregnant! Jan - Nov is 11 months! It was awful! Xx
