Effacement and Dilation Question

For those of you STM or nurses/doctors, can you be dilated and not effaced? Or the other way around? How does that work?

Re: Effacement and Dilation Question

  • At my last check I was 90% effaced but not dilated at all

  • They haven't checked me at my appts yet. We start that next week, but when I was in the hospital a couple weeks ago with a UTI, she checked and I was dilated 1cm. Not much, but didn't know how the whole effacing thing coincides with being dilated. When you become effaced, does it feel funny down there? Like does it feel like your baby is going to come out?
  • I don't feel like she's going to come out but she does feel very low. When she move I feel her behind my public bone!
  • Hmm.. My little man has always say very low and I feel him down low all the time. I guess I'll find out at the next appt if I'm effaced or anything. I didn't know if you can be one without the other.
  • Dr. Google seems to think so but not very much. The two usually come hand in hand. FTMs are more like to thin out first and then dilate.
  • @breezymeema7 I'm at FTM so perhaps that's why I'm so much of one without being the other at all.
  • Maybe I am effaced..? They didn't say anything about it when they checked, but then again they were mainly checking for dilation since I was having contractions. So it may just not have been relevant to tell me at the time. Who knows.
