vaccination schedule

I've just had a most frustrating experience with our doctor's office as I've had to reschedule my LO's four month appointment and they have just informed me that as the doctor is on vacation for three weeks, the earliest we could reschedule the appt for is August 19! He will be nearly five months by then and when I expressed my concern about the delay to getting his vaccinations they brushed me off and said it was ok so long as he doesn't travel outside of Canada/North America... Perhaps I'm being overly cautious or am just easily annoyed these days but this irks me. I love our doctor but the administration of the office is frustrating. Has anyone else had a disruption or delay to their LO's wellness check/vaccination schedule?

Re: vaccination schedule

  • We had to delay ours by 2 weeks because of a family vacation. We are out of state, at the ocean, and the doctor said it was fine. I wouldn't stress out about it, I don't think it will hurt your baby. I was irritated too when they said that we would have to wait until we came back instead of before but once they told me it is okay as long as he still gets them I am not worried. Those 2 month vac's were pretty rough on my little guy so I'm not looking forward to when we get back but I know they must be done!

  • I think it's more of a concern to get them too close rather than a week or two late. I have to get ours about 3 weeks late due to our summer schedule and our pediatrician said that was fine. I'm curious to see what others will say or if anyone has research to show that being a few weeks off schedule is a problem! I do know I'll schedule the 6 month ones based on when the 4 month ones were done and not the original schedule (if that makes sense).
  • My LO still hasn't had one hers from her 2 month vaccines due to the doctor not having any and then having to switch doctors and taking forever to get her record switched. She goes for her 4 month in 2 weeks and still hasn't had it
  • Thanks so much ladies! You have put me very much at ease. I also spoke with a family friend who is a nurse and confirmed what @babyh310 said and that it's more of a concern if they're too close together and that shots often get delayed due to vacations, moves or even baby being sick on the scheduled day...

@SMac2013 My little man had a tough time after his first set of shots too and I'm definitely not looking forward to that experience again... Probably best he doesn't go through that until after we venture on a cross-country road trip!

Best of luck to you all on this next set!!
  • Seems like you have had this all answered, but I worked in family practice and all this is exactly right. If you look at vaccination schedules, the only real issue is if they are too close. And I frequently was doing 4 month well child checks at closer to five or even six months! One or two delayed or missed appointments is certainly not a problem (although ideally you should make it to all appointments). Good luck with those four month shots this time around! We will be getting them next week.
