Babies on the Brain

Book Binge

edited July 2015 in Babies on the Brain

I have a minimum of a month before we start TTC and I admit I'm going a little crazy!  I really feel like I'm ready to start NOW but H and I agreed to close on a house first, and the seller already moved the date from July 30th to August 14th.  Hopefully she won't try to back out again.  In the meantime I'm trying to relax my excitement-and nerves- by doing what I can now to be more prepared when the time comes, which for me means lots of reading!  The more you know, right?

I'm currently in the middle of "The Mommy Docs' Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy and Birth", which is pretty good but contains some woo-woo which I tend to side eye pretty heavily.  I'm on the waitlist for "The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant" and TCOYF which I should be able to get by next weekend.  I'm got some Ina May books in my queue as well.  Those should keep me busy for the next six weeks!

I'm trying to read lots of different philosophies and experience to get the broadest picture that I can.  I love the birthing stories on TheBump too!

So tell me, what are you reading, or looking forward to reading, to prepare for pregnancy? Any reviews of books you've already read?

Or, how are you whiling away the time until you TTC?

That's ironic... Anyway, I'm at the beginning of the end of my waiting period too. Just started my last BC pack before we start TTC. My baby fever has manifested itself as incessant pinteresting on the Kids and Parenting board and reading here and now that there is an end in sight I've started making other preparations, such as scheduling my annual physical/pre-conception appt, looking into my maternity benefits at work, making apps to meet with financial planners, and looking for resources for DH so he knows just what he's gotten himself into by agreeing to TTC. As for reading I just got the new edition of TCOYF that I have been thumbing through. I've also been trying to do all the things I won't be able to do when KU, like eat fancy cheese, see lots of movies, and drink wine in the hot tub.

  • I've always leaned toward the documentaries; especially when I had my little guy back in 2011. I'm already seeing some new ones that have come around since. It sounds crazy, but check out "The great sperm race" on YouTube, if you already haven't seen it. It is a great conception video and puts things in perspective pretty well.

We are in the waiting game together!
  • I second The Great Sperm Race. Get your DH to watch it with you if you can. It really gave my DH a great perspective on what his swimmers have to do to fertilize an egg (since then he has been saying "Why are you trying to kill my sperm?")

  • @meggyme I think I borrowed it mainly for the name! I just put myself on the waitlist for basically all of the pregnancy books at the library because, hey they're free! and if I start on one and am not into it its not as if I've wasted any money on it.  I'm afraid to start Pinteresting just yet.  Its a fine line between distracting yourself while you wait and digging yourself deep into the baby hole!  Those pre-pregnancy must-dos sound like an awesome idea though!

@hookemnelson and @lalala20014 I will absolutely watch that with H!  I've never heard of it before, but its 1,000 degrees in NYC right now so we're confined to the bedroom (the only place in our apartment with AC) basically from the time we get home.  Seems like a good use of the laptop!
