When to introduce baby to crib?

I've been asking friends, nurses, doctors, etc. this question & everyone seems to beat around the bush regarding answering this question.

When should I start introducing my baby to his crib? He is two weeks and two days today, & I was thinking about putting him in his crib occasionally during the day while he naps (with me still in the room, getting some work done on the laptop), but wasn't sure if this was appropriate or not. When are you planning to introduce him to the crib at night?

Re: When to introduce baby to crib?

  • With my first, he slept in the rock n' play for about two weeks next to our bed, then we switched him over to the crib in his room. It was a super easy transition since he was still so young. We'll probably do it the same way this time around, too.

  • Whenever you feel like it. I'm sure there are some who've had their baby in cribs since day 1. There is no right or wrong time.

  • Cribs are made for babies to sleep in...so from day 1 if you want. I don't plan on having our LO in her crib until she outgrows the bassinet. Plus it's super hot and her room does not have AC.
  • You will get every answer conceivable on this one. You can do it whenever you choose there is no right or wrong.
  • I have since day one, however at 3 am, its sometimes easier to just not walk that far :)
  • My daughter has been in it since day 1!!!!

Different people will do what feels right to them… But the sooner the better I think! You want baby to associate sleeping at night with being in the crib. Will be better for you and better for baby
  • There is no right or wrong. DH and I plan to start our baby girl off in our room in the pack n play. We are planning to play it by ear but we would like to transfer her to crib sooner rather than later to help ease the transition. Like you, we think that when she is a couple of weeks old we will probably start allowing naps, etc in the crib. Maybe around the time I go back to work, around 6-8 weeks, we would like to have her in the crib.

A lot of it depends on personal preference, your lifestyle, and your baby. For example I imagine if our baby is still waking up several times a night at 6 weeks we may find it more convenient to keep her in our room for a bit longer.

Yes definitely depends on your lifestyle and needs! I guess I would probably prefer to go into the nursery where the crib is and do what I have to do, so not to wake/disturb my husband as much as possible, who after a short stay at home, will still have to go to work every morning. I am not going to work until January 4th
  • Day 1. My kids have hated bassinets. His crib is in our room so that helps but he loves it.
  • I was advised from day 1. It helps to avoid any potential transition issue from the bassinet or whatnot.

Besides, I had to sign an agreement with my hospital that bub was going to sleep in her own cot and room in with us for the first 6 months.

We are doing this. At first, I had the crib all set up in his nursery down the hall and was planning on using a bassinet. But, I figured we invested in a good mattress that I'd rather use that from day one. So we took the crib apart and put it in the master bedroom with us! (my DH wanted to do this originally but I didn't listen).

  • With my first, I tried to use the crib from day 1. I didn't buy anything else. She hated it. She wouldn't sleep in it at all. The ONLY place I could get her to sleep was on the floor. She is 9 now and to this day, she still likes sleeping on the floor. I make her sleep in her bed but she prefers the floor.
  • Since the day I brought my LO home he has had at least one nap a day in the crib. Sometimes it is easier to place him in there vs anywhere else if I have chores to do around the house. He does just fine.
  • Because of SIDS, the paediatrician told me 3 months before switching him to his bedroom and my doctor had said 6 months. With our first, I ended up moving him to his bedroom around 3 months because he was making too much noise and keeping me awake. He slept in the bassinet of the play pen in our room. He never gave me any trouble with the transition to his crib. But I freaked out and had the baby monitor on full blast the first couple of nights. His bedroom is a foot from ours! FTM, what can I say! Do what you think is best.
  • That's a good idea. It's whenever you want to. My oldest two were big babies and only stayed in the bassinet for a few weeks, This ones a tiny little one but she rolls to her side and wiggles a lot so I wanna put her in a crib now... Just have to make room as we share a small space.

I have never heard of this. I know that some people see safety issues with co-sleeping bit why does the hospital want the baby in the same room?
