Woohoo..Hello Maternity Leave!

I have broke off on Maternity Leave at 33 and a half weeks as I had all my holidays to take!
It still hasn't sunk in that is me off to have a baby but it is a good feeling to know that I will no longer be on my feet for 12 and a half hours at a time, full time!

What is everyone doing on their maternity leaves-apart from the obvious of patiently awaiting their babys!?

Re: Woohoo..Hello Maternity Leave!

  • Since I have summers off anyway, I'm off from work for a total of seven months (too bad I'm waiting for baby for 3 of them.) I'm spending it working on the house and playing with my toddler. In general, I'm enjoying a more laid back existence.

  • Congrats!

I have summers off also, well I used to work a part time job at the college but not this year!

I am trying to plan fun things with my toddler but I keep getting caught up in scrubbing the house. Today we might be going to a toddler jungle gym. I'm also going fishing with hubby as much as I can because I don't think I'll ever be able to again with two babies and finding a sitter, at least not until I'm done breastfeeding.
  • I'm going to try to work up to the day until I have my baby. Blah. Sometimes I worry that I won't make it, but I want to save that time to be home after he is born. Enjoy your time off!!

  • I work in the schools, so I have been off since May 29. I go back August 20 until I can't work anymore. I have been pretty okay so far, so I hope I keep it up until at least the first day of school so I get my paid time off back.

  • Good for you for getting to enjoy some time to yourself before baby arrives! I pretty much have to work up until the baby is here because I only get 6 weeks paid time off (at 80% of my salary) for maternity leave so I don't want to waste it before she arrives.
  • Going by past forums i think maternity leave works slightly different here. I will have 4 weeks holiday pay then my mat leave starts 2 weeks before babys due so technically I am not using any maternity leave. I have a whole years worth of holidays so taking 4 before the babys here and 4 after my maternity.
    Enjoy ladies xxx
  • I'm so jealous!!!!!! Sigh, I still have 2 miserable weeks of work left before I take off and then.....because I live in cool California, I'm not headed back to work until January! Lol I have a feeling getting through these last 2 weeks will be challenging
  • I am 31 weeks and still working as a floor nurse. I work 3 12hr shifts in a row and yesterday didn't get to eat until 5pm. My tailbone and left hip hurt so bad I limp from patient to patient. I am talking to my boss tomorrow about the possibility of taking 2 weeks of vacation before my due date and then start my 12 weeks of fmla. That will put me working through August. I don't think I can keep up after that.
  • @imcissne i have just worked 3 12 and a half hour night shifts at 33 and a half weeks pregnant! Not that it is a competition just saying i feel.ur pain and thats why i am so happy i am on mat leave!
Good luck with getting the leave xxx
  • I'm so jealous. Working until I go into labor.
  • I own a business so not taking off until baby gets here :(
  • Maternity leave here is pathetic...or I guess I should say the lack of maternity leave.  :-w

  • I feel so lucky at how good ours is. As i say i am off now on 4 weeks holiday then maternity leave starts, think i get full pay for a few months, then half pay for another few then 20% until a further couple months and then unpaid. Then i will have the rest of this years over due holidays paid and any i rack up from next years.
We are so lucky compared to what u ladies are saying!
  • I am also off for the summer so I've been off since about June 20th. Then I have 8 weeks maternity leave. So for all of you working right up to the last minute. I wish there was more time for maternity leave for women

  • The maternity leave policy at my school is actually terrible. We only get 30 days paid after the baby is born, but you have to have the sick days for it. I only have 22, so I only get 22 days paid. Most of my leave will be unpaid. : ( I wanted to try and start the school year to get more days, but since I won't be in for the whole year they are prorating my sick days, so instead of 10 I think I get 5 (having a hard time getting an answer on this.)

I plan to work until the day the baby is due... Otherwise I won't be able to take 12 weeks on the backend.

I was going to work from home up until baby is due, but just found out I could take the two weeks prior to my due date. So I will be starting around the 3rd week of August and not going back until January!
  • My last day of work is August 7th. We are moving that afternoon and subsequent weekend. I'll be staying home with this baby and since I work in ministry in the U.S., I will not have any paid leave whatsoever. I still can't believe I get to stay home. I've worked since I was 18. This is going to be so strange! We've made some big sacrifices to do this, but I'm so excited!!
  • The project I've been working on since I got preggo just ended last week and I have declined the next phase because it will go past my due date, so I am now off until I go back to work after baby. It's pretty surreal. I'm on vacation now and when I get back I will be doing my nursery (haven't started yet) and the organizing my house for a move in December. On one hand I feel like I've got time to get things done, and on the other I feel like I'll be scrambling. Hopefully I can take a little bit of time to sit back with my feet up and enjoy the last month of pregnancy!
  • I am off for the summer but will return to work Aug. 4th. I plan to work until baby is born. I did with my first. I only get paid for the sick days I have (a total of 8). Most of my 6 weeks will be unpaid so I really can't afford to take off early unless I have to.
  • My job won't let me take more than 6 weeks off even though I'm having a csection! :( but I'm hoping that I'll have the strength and energy to go visit some close friends and family while I'm off!
  • I'm due sept 1 at and plan on going off August 14.
I don't know if I'll make it till then!
I work in a hospital and stand all day. Granted I don't work 12 hour shifts so that's nice. But with my swollen feet and general fatigue I'm wondering if sooner might be better. I broke my back in a car accident when I was 19 so that doesn't help matters! The extra weight is starting to really slow me down. Here in Canada I'll get a whole year off if I stay working right up until the baby's born. Or I can go off early without pay until she is born and then start my year of maternity leave. I only get 60 percent of my wage which is not ideal but better then nothing!
  • @michelledusel84 sorry to drastically change the subject but is that ur 3d scan in ur profile pic..if so..wow!! X
  • Jealous! Enjoy it! My last day is Aug 12 and I'm counting down the hours. Going on vacay for the first week (beach is 2 hours away), then setting up the nursery and hanging with my other kids until the baby comes.

  • Working til she comes, or I'm put on bed rest. Last time I was put on bed rest- went to work to tie up ends (I'm a music teacher ) and landed myself an induction at 36 weeks. Wish I could leave early, but there's that money thing....
  • @emzrankin yes that was at 32 weeks:) baby girl was 4 pounds 6 ounces at that point!
