How many of you have used/would use one of those power carts at Walmart?

Here's a pic in case you guys don't know what I'm talking about...
I'm 37 weeks 3 days and I'm also in the middle of moving. I worked 50 hours last week and I've been sleeping on average 4 hours a night for the past week. I've been helping my boyfriend lift a lot of heavy furniture so that's giving me back pain and severe round ligament pain...so I used one of these babies the other day when shopping! I got SO many evil glares, bad judgment from people I know...saying I need to stick it out and waddle like the rest of them. But I wanna ask...is it really so bad? Have any of you used one during pregnancy??

My husband tries to get me to use one every time we go to the grocery, bc of my pelvic pain but I refuse to use one unless I seriously couldn't walk. I just can't get over the images of all the huge slobby women I always see riding around in them. It's a pride issue I guess.. Would be nice not to have to walk tho!

Edit: And yes I should mention, like PP that if someone actually needed it I would feel bad. I just can't help but wonder about some of the people I've been seeing at my local Walmart riding them.. tho:/
  • I only did it that one time this week because I've been in a lot of pain...I understand that they should be reserved for disabled people. But how many people that can't walk go into Walmart without a wheelchair or walking aid of some sort? I guess there are people with broken legs and whatnot. I felt like one of those really fat people that ride around on those things that I look at side-eyed. But I really felt like there was no way I could make it. Idk...maybe I should stop going to the store until I pop this girl out
  • I am not judging nor would I, but just wanted you to consider the disabled. While they may have a walking aid..that walking aid does not have a cart on it and they more than likely wouldnt be able to push a cart and use a walking aid. Just some things to consider is all.

There are always extras at my Walmart, and other grocery stores, so it didn't really cross my mind too much that I'd be taking from others if I used one bc there's literally like always at least 5 still sitting there. I just don't think I'm in enough pain, I'd rather grunt through it I guess. lol

Yeah you're right about the no cart thing
  • Nope, I wouldn't use one unless medically necessary.  I have two perfectly good legs and as sore and swollen as my feet/ankles/legs are, I can make it on my own.  My husband has severe anxiety issues so asking him to go to Walmart with me is a joke - so even if I wanted to use a cart, I would just be getting off and back on every time I wanted to get something.
  • I've thought about. I just take my time walking thru the store instead.
  • Nope. I even parked a long distance away at the mall rather than searching for a close spot. I have two good legs

  • I would be too embarrassed to ever ride in one of those carts because of my pregnancy uncomfortableness. Far worst people off.

Lol I don't remember where I posted this... Maybe flame free Friday? I look at the carts longingly. Then walk on by. I just can't justify it.

Not going to lie, I totally look longingly at them too. Walking induces major contractions for me and there have been many times I only buy half of my shopping list because I just can't make it through the store to get what I need. Even after the doctor said to walk less, I still just can't justify the cart!

This. It's probably 99% pride but I just can't bring myself to do it.
  • Not going to lie, I used one the other day, but ONLY because my husband refused to let me go grocery shopping with him if I didn't. I'm on strict bed rest at this point, but HAD to get out before I went 4 wall crazy. I made sure there were plenty more but even then, I felt so embarrassed! I obviously have no plans to go shopping again after that experience.

  • Most disabled people do have wheelchairs and maybe a walker but coming from someone with an aunt with heart failure when she goes grocery shopping or somewhere with an electric shopping cart she uses one plus its very handy for them since it has a built in basket.
  • I wouldn't use one either despite being in quite a bit of pain right now. They are for disabled people, and I'm just not disabled. I also can't ever justify using the pregnant moms parking spaces at the doctor's office, zoo, etc... I keep thinking that someone who has complications or is pregnant with multiples is going to show up immediately after me, and I'll have taken up a spot they could have benefited from a lot more than me. Part of it though at the grocery store is that I always have my 2.5 year old with me, so its not really practical. Its not like she can walk along beside me the entire time and not get into stuff, and I can't exactly toss her in the basket :P
  • I've used one a couple times Walmart is huge and I can't keep up with my crew if we are all together walking to the back of the store, plus my pelvis hurts. Pregnancy is a temporary disability by law but if I had one and seen someone needed it I would totally give it up but there have always been plenty of other ones when I have gotten into one.

I have considered it but I'm also on modified bedrest.... my SIL used one when she was pregnant with triplets and on bedrest. I haven't actually done it because my husband can always go with me and usually I walk til I start feeling crampy (which is maybe 5 minutes) and then just sit for the rest of the trip.

I did when I was on modified bed rest but I felt like it slowed me down.
  • I'm on modified bed rest and didn't go because I know I would have to use the cart. I would if I really had to go on my own, but you know what your body can handle. I wouldn't feel bad if you felt you needed to do it.

  • I used one in home depot a few weeks ago. I had just finished my work shift, Sciatica was on full force and my feet were so sore it hurt to even be wearing socks, but time is ticking and i needed to get my errand DONE. Im overweight and i could feel people glaring at me but i could seriously not give a crap less. Do what you gotta do.
  • Wouldn't use one myself - but I try not to form an opinion about anyone I see in them. I don't know their reasoning and I just feel like its none of my business. I expect that people will have common courtesy that unless absolutely need it, then you won't take it. I am not naive enough to think this happens 100% of the time - but like I said, not really my business do what you have to!

For me - parking far away from the store and then walking in, and walking around to do my shopping is about the only exercise I am getting nowadays.....so bad.
  • I'm not so concerned with OP using a cart as I am her staying she's helping lift and move heavy objects! C'mon girl tell your man you are in no condition to be lifting anything other than yourself these days! Please enlist the help of others with moving heavy stuff, I'd hate to find out something happened to you because of it

    This!
  • Shopping and walking around stores is my only source of cardio these days!

  • Hey, walking through the store is my only form of "working out" right now haha! So no, I would not use one but I also wouldn't judge you for using it. I also don't know what's it's like or even know anyone who is disabled besides my overweight father in law....so I can't relate to the difficulties.

Now what really gets me worked up is when I see people using the handicap parking spots when they don't need it (ie. Waiting for their spouse/partner/friend to run in the store "really quick")! That really ruffles my feathers! X(
  • Last week my doctor put me on bed rest at my 34 wk appt. Bc I've dialted to a 2 with contractions hourly. The reason I have dialted is bc my job kept me practically running all day. I thought about using one the other day at walmart but didn't want to deal with the looks, or how much more time it would take me to get around the people, plus I know that disabled people need them. My feet are so swollen they are about to pop (no joke). & I have scoliosis, so my back pain is beyond ridiculous. ( I have to use a walker at night just to go to the bathroom). When I go to my doctor Wednesday, if I have dialted more, I will most likely be using the scooter. No reason to put my baby in danger because she was born too early because people judge situations they don't have all the facts to.
  • I used one at WalMart last week. My pelvis and RLP was so bad after the first store I could literally barely walk. I only needed a couple things, it was late in the evening, store was not busy and there were quite a few "scooters" available. I was super self conscious about it but no one cared. I was able to get a front row parking spot so I was at least by then able to walk to the car.
  • Those things go too slow.

  • I've never used one because I don't believe myself to be disabled. Even though my doctor put me on short-term disability and on strict bedrest. As a daughter of someone with MS I can't take one of the carts knowing it may mean that someone who needs it more won't get one.

I will say though, yesterday DH and I went to babies R us and Hubby forced me into a push wheelchair with a shopping cart attached. I got in it only because my sciatica had me limping all over the store and because I felt BRU would be forgiving. I didn't get any funny stares and honestly I didn't feel as bad for using it because of the context.
  • Wow! I didn't realize it was so "taboo" for a pregnant woman to use one. If there is one available I use it! To each his own and everyone's pregnancy is different. Mine, has been pretty awful! I have bad sciatic pain from time to time and I get crazy dizzy spells! Even with all that, life doesn't stop! Groceries won't buy themselves and if the scooter makes my shopping more bare able then scooter it is!!!!
