Help! I HATE Vegetables!

Hi moms! I am 23 years old, ftm. Ever since I was little, I CANT STAND most veggies. But I read that by 20 weeks baby can taste the food I eat and is more likely to like something that I eat during pregnancy! I'm so worried that my child will be as picky as me unless I find a way to choke down some things I don't like. Any advice?!

Re: Help! I HATE Vegetables!

  • Roast and season the crap out of them. That's what I do. Chop it all up, olive oil, seasonings, and roast. Even broccoli becomes edible when roasted.

Look for kids' snacks. There are a few brands, like Sunrype, that are made to trick children into eating veggies. Also try smoothies and premium juices that do the same. Just make sure you are looking at sodium and sugar intakes when making final decisions... Also look at recipes that make it easy to hide veggies, like lasagna, pastas, stir fry, etc. Ahaha just look up ways to trick kids into eating veggies, and then do the same to yourself.
  • I've never had this issue because my parents never gave us the option of being picky. But if you eat pasta with sauce (not just butter or cheese) you can chop veggies such as carrots, peppers, onion, spinach, garlic into a canned sauce or sauce from scratch with lots of veggies added. Chop them up really fine so they can't be picked out. I did this recently when my in laws (who are picky eaters) came and stayed with us for a while, it worked. Other ideas are the regular veggies and dip, putting veggies into smoothies, buying the fruit and veggie juice drinks. I love eating avocado by itself with a bit of salt and pepper, it really doesn't have a strong flavour but is nice and creamy and one of the veggies that could be added to a smoothies, or made into guacamole. I hope some of those are things you don't hate, part of it is just trying things again now that you are older rather than avoiding them.

  • I agree with @willashbaby. I hate raw broccoli, but if it's roasted with some seasonings, I LOVE it. But it has to be really tender. And I make a killer pasta dish where I just use a huge jar of prego, throw in a brick of Neufchâtel, sprinkle in some roasted red pepper flakes, shredded parm, and a few handfuls of baby spinach. It wilts to the point where you can't really taste it, it's just an extra texture. Add your noodle of choice and you're set! We throw frozen peas in with most of our meals too. Rice + chicken + peas + some kind of Chinese, Thai, or Indian inspired sauce... Yum! One of my go-to easy meals is just rice and a can of this Indian stuff. The brand is Jyoti and it's in the same aisle as the other ethnic stuff. (At my grocery store, this aisle even has a section for British food. What?! Amazing. Gimme all the Jaffa cakes!) I added a picture of it... It's pretty spicy and I'm a weakling when it comes to hot, so we add some milk or cream to cool it down.

  • What is mood paint?

I don't even know! I got a no-chip manicure on Friday and from the swatches, I chose the blue color that you can see on the tip. Basically, when my hands are cold, my whole nail turns blue. When I get super hot, they turn all pink. Normally, though, they look like this with the blue tips because my body heat isn't reaching the tips.

  • I love the blue tips your just naturally AWESOME!!!
  • try juicing! i love veggies but i like to juice every morning so i know i'm getting plenty of vitamins if i only eat pizza the rest of the day.  you can choke down 4-5 different veggies in one glass.
  • Honestly the thought of veggies has made me want to barf. But roasting with tons of garlic is the way I usually go! Of coure drenched in butter or olive oil but I buy really good high quality vitamins from the health food store... So honestly I haven't been feeling as guilty with my crap food addiction lol
  • All vegetables taste good IMO if you smother them in butter and lots of garlic. I do this with green beans, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, kale, etc. Also tons of cheese melted on top of squash, zucchini, and broccoli is a good way to go too
  • Haha no problem!
  • my favorite way to eat veggies is to buy the frozen california blend and soak it in tons of butter and garlic powder lol. so good
  • Thanks for the tips ladies! I'm going to start with some greens in smoothies! Also what type of seasonings do you recommend for roasting them?
  • Salt pepper garlic onion, all the savory stuff.
  • Bacon makes everything better, and there are nitrate free bacons out there. Bacon bits with sautéed kale, bacon wrapped roasted Brussels sprouts, BLTs with plenty of mayo... I could go on. (This is probably why I can't tell if I'm starting to get a bump or if I'm just getting fat.) I've been putting a little spinach in my eggs every morning and then dumping shredded cheddar on top to mask the flavor. I'll echo the roasted broccoli lovers. It makes the house smell like toots, so I put broccoli florets in foil, drizzle soy sauce on top, and cook on the grill outside. Beef stew with carrots, celery, onions, and peas is an easy crock pot dinner. Good luck!
  • Home made vegetable soup is a good way to go as well! Usually mellows out most veggie flavors and you can use chicken stock, onion, and seasonings to make it even less veg tasting.
  • I love grilled veggies that have been marinated in Italian dressing. {Grilled Zucchini is my favorite} Grilled gives them a little big of a different texture, and marinated a different flavor. OR have you tried fried veggies?? I'm from the south where we fry almost anything! My hubby only eats a handful of veggies, and will eat more when they're fried. {Try fried yellow squash, fried okra, fried green tomatoes} YUM!
  • I haven't had a problem choking down veggies, but I CAN tell you that DD absolutely LOVES veggies and I ate pizza rolls, ice cream, and sour patch kids basically every day of pregnancy with her so don't worry too much about baby's tastes, just focus on getting the nutrition you need every day.
  • Lol I normally LOVE raw veggies but pregnancy has me avoiding them. Today was the first time I've had lettuce in a good 2 months. If it's a big deal to you my only advice is to suck it up. You're gonna need to eat them in front of your child if you want them to eat it (they won't touch it if you dont) so get used to them now.
