Trying to Get Pregnant

O/AF waiting game

Sooo after all my tests came back normal my GYN basically told me my body just doesn't feel like ovulating and that's why it's been so long. I've now been on 1000mg of metformin for a little over a week (doc prescribed be enough for up to 3 months) with just side effects, no O or AF symptoms yet. Was anyone else prescribed metformin (or similar) to get the lady bits working again? How long did it take for you to work? Anything natural work to help things along? Thank you!

Re: O/AF waiting game

  • I don't have experience with this, but I'm wondering if you are charting?

  • Are you taking your bbt? Or charting? If not that's your first step to take. If you are charting link your chart and we can do a chart stalk.
  • I JUST started charting so there's really nothing to go on yet, but my doc and the ultrasound tech both said they don't think I've ovulated.

Didn't you kind of already ask this question here ?

Edit: What BC were you on before stopping to TTC?

  • @lala2004 I did ask what general experiences and side effects people had with metformin when it was prescribed to me, and answers to that question is actually what got me to start tracking BBT and charting. I am now just curious as to how long it actually took to have desired results because I was told by my doctor that it could be anywhere from 3 days to 3 months. I was on microgestin green for a year, and then microgestin purple for about 9 months.
  • Did you have issues with not having the breakthrough "period" on the pill when you were on it? I've heard that's happens to some people on microgestin.

I guess I find this kind of odd because I thought most doctors prescribed some kind of progesterone when a woman didn't get her period. I'm not doctor, but that's just what I've heard of more. That's what I would ask about if this doesn't work for you.

Yeah, Provera seems to be the common answer for lack of a period not Metformin.  Metformin is used in the Fertility world frequently, but usually in addition to other stuff.

How long has it been since you had a period?

I would agree with PP about provera... usually that's one of the go-to's Doctors use when you haven't had a period in a while... have you done that??

Since they gave you metformin, do you have some other problem, like PCOS? anything that the Dr. might have mentioned?

Dr put me on BC pills at age 18 to regulate period.

    (Typical Cycle length 35-48 days)

  • I did have withdrawal bleeds regularly with my BC, and I've now missed 5 cycles since going off. My doctor thought I maybe had PCOS, but my blood work and ultrasounds all came back negative and normal (aside from slightly high testosterone levels but she said its nothing to be concerned about). She said if AF didn't come back within the 3 months of metformin; that we could try something else but for now everything looks normal and healthy- I just have to wait :/ So far just uh, digestive issues from the pills but that's it.
  • I'm not a Dr., but for me my Endocrinologist prescribed Metformin to help treat the insulin resistance that goes along with PCOS. Getting the insulin resistance under control is supposed to help stimulate normal ovulation. The side effects are rough at first but for me they got better. Not sure yet how the Met will or won't contribute to normal cycles. ...I just got off the pill so I'm charting and waiting to see when/if I ovulate. My endo started me on the Met months ago for general PCOS reasons (not TTC at that time).

    Consider seeing a Reproductive Endo?

@cjt121413 I think that's why she gave me the metformin- just to help my body remember how to ovulate again (she mentioned my age as part of why she didn't want to do too much without just giving my body time). My doctor isn't concerned yet, so I'm trying not to be either. All my bits and pieces look normal and my bloodwork came back normal; along with having normal cycles before birth control she says its uncommon for this to happen but not unheard of. If it doesn't come back within the 3 months she has me on metformin I will certainly ask about provera. Thank you ladies so much for all the help!
