Low blood sugar/Diabetes??

So I am 16.5 weeks and I have never experienced low blood sugar or near fainting before today. Most of my family on one side is diabetic (I don't know if it is genetic or not). I was in church today and the pastor had just finished his sermon and we stood up and were singing into the next hymn. About two minutes in, I started getting really light headed and my entire body felt like a tree blowing in the wind, I could barely stand (I had to use the pew to steady myself). I looked up at the rows ahead of me and could barely see a thing, I was sweating and my ears were ringing so loud. My mother finally asked if I was going to be sick and I said no, so she insisted I sit down. I have never experienced anything like this in my entire life, and I hope I never have to again. After the service, people were coming up to me, asking if I was okay (I must have been shaking on my feet pretty bad). My mother said it could have been my blood sugar dropping and she also said that pregnant women can develop diabetes (which I've never heard before). I am just super worried about this and am asking my doctor at my appointment on Thursday. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

  • It also could just be standing up too fast, dizziness/faintness from standing up fast is pretty common in pregnancy, I know whenever I stand right up (at a speed that would be normal for me pre-pregnancy) I'll get a few steps away and then feel like I have to lean against something so I don't fall down.

That said, it is also possible to develop gestational diabetes, they usually check for it a little later on than where you are, but since you have an appointment this week it couldn't hurt to bring it up to your doctor, if only for peace of mind :)

  • It is possible to develop diabetes while pregnant but that causes high blood sugar. Those with diabetes who get low blood sugar is because of the medication used to treat it. That being said you could have had low blood sugar unrelated to diabetes. I have that problem with every pregnancy and for me that makes me feel very shaky and extremely hungry before anything else. Could also have been dehydration or something called a vasovegal episode where the blood pressure suddenly drops.
  • I would lean more towards a quick drop in your blood pressure from standing up too fast. I had it happen a few times with my first LO,and it can be fairly common. I'm diabetic this go-around, and when your blood sugar gets too low, you definitely know it. I get the shakes pretty bad and every muscle in my body starts to hurt. It doesn't get better just by sitting down. I HAVE to eat/drink carbs to get my sugar up and for the symptoms to go away.

  • I normally experience dizziness or light headedness from standing up too fast, but nothing to this extent.. I didn't know what was happening. It could very well be unrelated to blood sugar, but I am not leaving my doctor's office unless I find out what is going on. I also get terrible headaches or migraines on a near daily basis. I love being pregnant (:
  • Another one here saying it's more likely just a drop in blood pressure, it happens. Earlier on I would get this from time to time standing up from my chair or walking down the stairs quickly at work. Best thing is to sit down with your head between your legs and breath until it passes. Then get up slowly and drink water. Diabetics have the opposite problem unless they take too much insulin. As far as I know all preggos are tested for gestational diabetes around 28 weeks unless they are high risk, then it's earlier. I tested at 10 weeks and so far have passed. Feel better and don't worry much, this is pretty common.
  • I have struggled with low BS at times and you do get those symptoms from it. It is also very common in pregnancy. However, the only way it normally passes is if you eat something sweet.  So if yours passed on its own, than I would lean towards blood pressure drop as well.

  • Sounds like low blood pressure. I have a heart condition with extremely low blood pressure and this happens to me all of the time. When this would happen to me I was told to lay down and put my feet up to help with the blood circulation. Also, eating something (usually something salty and/or sweet) would make me feel better. Make sure you are staying really hydrated as well.
