Using pregnancy as an excuse

shrsrishrsri member
edited July 2015 in January 2016 Moms
confession time - I was pulled over by a cop for not wearing seatbelt and I lied that my doc had instructed me not to use a seatbelt as it puts pressure on the growing bump... The cop was sweet and bought it and let me go :)
Have any of you used pregnancy as an excuse to get out of tricky situations ?

  • Our laundry room is in our basement, I tell DH that I can't carry the laundry basket down the stairs. It gets me out of doing laundry, he just carries it downstairs for me and starts a load, then brings the clean load back up! I haven't done laundry in weeks!

In NH you don't have to wear one if your 18+ - I'm really bad about wearing my seatbelt. Lmaoooo

    Edit to add:

It used to be a habit and then I stopped when I would ride around with my friends (18 to 22). I also owned older vehicles until now that don't alert you with an annoying noise. Habit isn't really there anymore. I've become better at putting it on and not ignoring the ding ding ding in my new vehicle.

@AnEarthenVessel - Probably pretty different movements. Squats and deadlifts you can do in a controlled manner using correct form. While trying to roll a 500 lb patient, you are probably more likely to pull something or twist funny given your condition. So, you aren't being dishonest. ;)

Not that is justifies not wearing a seat belt but here (India) seat belt rule is still new ... We are all still getting used to it... Also our traffic is nuts, No one gets to go over 20/30 kms per hour unless ur on a highway..
Bonus info - it's still perfectly legal to travel like this if only the guy riding were wearing a helmet ..

When I was pregnant for my first my grandma told my husband I wasn't allowed to carry laundry baskets. Since then he has carried all full ones downstairs and if home carries clean ones up, pregnant or not.

I'm terrible at putting it on right when we leave the house, but my SO is like your mom when you were 11 making sure everyone in the car has it on before leaving the house. Also, I couldn't bare the thought of anything happening to anyone I love because they were too careless to put a seatbelt on.

I blame almost everything on being pregnant, but I feel I'm not lying.
  • @Monilee1017 I'm hoping this routine sticks even after baby! I wonder if I can train him to do other stuff around the house too. I'm thinking "vacuuming puts too much strain on my back" haha!
  • My Dr told me to absolutely wear it. Just to pull it low below my bump. Otherwise when I wreck and baby meets steering wheel I'd never forgive myself.
  • nanampnanamp member
Actually, there is a compelling argument from economics that it would be safer to have knives sticking out of steering wheels. People would drive really safely! ;)
  • Oh my word. Please wear a seatbelt!
  • I use it as an excuse not to work outdoor recess duty in 95 heat and humidity. Totally worth it.

    Totally do this every day.

I knew it's already been stressed, but please wear your seatbelt!

@alice2Bcheshire add me to the litter box too. Indoor cats and I did it all throughout my first pregnancy. This time, I just can't. So DH does it. (I have to remind him daily, though, which is more obnoxious than actually doing it myself)

No. Not lmao. I'm an ER doc. Wear your seatbelt. I'm not messing around about this. Just because the government makes a rule, doesn't mean it's based on good medical evidence. Seat belts save lives. No seat belts gives us organ donors.

    See this study:

    Quote from the abstract:
Approximately half of fetal losses in motor-vehicle crashes could be prevented if all pregnant women properly wore seat belts.

If you don't do it for you, do it for your child.

This... For the love of all things good PLEASE wear your seatbelt. I don't think anyone wants to go through a windshield.

Just for the record - I went back to edit that I have been better about wearing it mostly because I am pregnant. Also, not sure if any of you remember - there was a woman who was in a fender bender in this community around 8 weeks and the seatbelt caused bleeding. That made me nervous. Now that we're all further along I would AGREE with you that seatbelts should be worn even if its not required by law.

The lmao was more nervous laughter - not to be taken as "I do whatever the eff I want even when I'm pregnant". More like "Whoops I'm guilty of letting this habit slip and need to work on it - especially because I want my child to be in the habit, as well."

  • Glad to hear it!
  • Seatbelts are a primary offense here in Ohio. That means you can be pulled over simply for not having one on. Many other states require a triggering offense (speeding for example) to be ticketed. As someone in the health field who studied traumatic injuries from automobile crashes - wear your seatbelt. It's a good habit to start now so you do it even when not pregnant. Your child needs it's mom!

The seatbelt may have caused bleeding, but it also probably saved her life or at least protected her from worse physical harm.

  • @KaraEpp16 But that's the thing about accidents. You don't know how bad they're going to be or when you will be in one. I've seen stats of severe injuries in relatively minor crashes and also instances where people walk away from major ones. You just never know! But I commend your effort to change now!

I was actually involved in a "fender bender" at 8 weeks pregnant this past May. It was a 3 car accident and I was the car in the middle. I was hit so hard that if I had not been wearing my seatbelt, my head would have smashed through the windshield. I'm not sure what it is about that possibility that should prompt such an arrogant attitude about basic driving safety.
  • @SummerOH My mom was always on us to wear them - she doesn't move the car unless they are on. It was a habit for the majority of my life.

I just felt the need to defend myself because I'm not a complete moron.
  • Im sorry but pregnancy is NO excuse to not wear a seatbelt! You can be the safest driver in the world but theres always some dumbass out tbere who can completely ruin lifes. Please wear your seatbelt for yours and babys saftey.

Do you sit on the steering wheel? because that seems a little dramatic - Also, air bags.

I'm not being arrogant - I'm just taking note of the dramatization over fender benders.

Have you ever been in a car accident? I mean one where you're at a complete stop and get rear-ended by someone going 40 mph? Because that was me recently. If  you haven't been in one like that, I think you should stop talking and maybe take a safe driving course on the science of physics. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, they are completely unpredictable, and I'm not being overly dramatic.

Also, air bags- obviously you've never heard of what can happen when you're not wearing a seatbelt and your air bags go off. They can cause more physical harm than the accident itself if you're not properly restrained in your seat. In my case, I was at a complete stop, so my air bags didn't go off and yours likely wouldn't either in that situation depending on the type of car you drive and how new it is.
  • @KaraEpp16 Not going to quote because it's too long, but I will say my mom was in a really nasty fender bender. She was hit so hard from behind that her car flew forward into the one in front when she was stopped at a red light. She had awful bruising where her seatbelt was, so I do think hitting the windshield or steering wheel is sometimes possible, especially for petite people like my mom. My airbags deployed when I was hit at around 35mph too. If I didn't have my belt on my face would've been smushed. But I think you get it. Just sharing my stories.

Seat belts are super dangerous ya'll.

I'm sure People just love being slammed into windshields and thrown out car windows in accidents.

If you had been in multiple car accidents, yeah, you would care a bit more, so I think it's safe to assume. And because you feel that "I am not worth it" doesn't change a thing. We are all adults here. Have a good day.
  • @SummerOH I think it has a lot to do with people not being a safe distance away from the steering wheel when they are petite. I'm not as petite as my other female family members but I do observe how close they drive to the steering wheel and it's usually not the distance they (safety experts) suggest. We even joke that some of them might need to look into pedal extenders. When you're five foot nothing it can be easy to creep closer and closer without even noticing that you're eventually on top of it.

Thank you for having faith in my ability to use my brain!
  • On the seat belt more, it was on our news recently a car had a tire blow. It flipped multiple times and he wasn't wearing a seat belt, the only thing that saved him was he bounced off a car before hitting pavement. I'm sorry but who doesn't wear seat belts.
