Winter Outdoor (Maternity) Gear

Has anybody on here been pregnant in the winter before? I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and we get WINTER up here. It starts in October and lasts until May. It's very cold and we get a ton of snow. So far all of the maternity winter coats I see online look like windbreakers with a little bit of padding and I'm afraid they won't be warm enough. Has anyone used one that keeps you warm in extreme cold?

Also, I'm a very active person and would like to stay as active as possible this winter. I biked all winter for the last 7 years, skied for as long as I can remember,  and ran outside all winter for the last 15 or so. This year, I'm probably planning to stick to walking and cross country skiing because ice. Does anyone have recommendations for snow pants or cross country ski pants that are big-belly-friendly?

Re: Winter Outdoor (Maternity) Gear

  • I just moved to STL in April I lived an hour north of Detroit in Oakland County. Auburn Hills to be exact... I bought a $200 Columbia jacket in FL on sale.... Refusing to let that go to waste. It will be big enough to sport my bump. I'm thinking even thermals underneath everything??

  • I'm so glad you brought this up. I'm in MN and have similar issues. My guess is that we won't be able to do a ton of shopping in stores or online until at least fall - I bet that outdoor stores like Columbia and North Face have stuff like that year round though. I've had a tough time finding anything anywhere else right now. I know it's weird to think about it this early but I'm worried the first snow will hit here before I have a coat that zips!
  • Most people I've talked to say they got so warm from the baby that they didn't need a heavy coat. My mom wasn't nearly as far along as we will be and she barely wore a jacket over a sweater. Going from a warm house, to a warm car, to warm buildings, I usually get super warm even without baby insulation. When I have this baby, I'll still have at least two solid months of winter left and I don't want to have a coat that is way too big for the rest of the season. I'll probably do a wool pea coat that overlaps and has a tie so it'll fit me both pregnant and after.
  • I have two late December kids and managed to get through part of winter in Ohio with just my regular knee length wool coats. I just didn't button them. I only have a 2.5 block walk to work, so that was fine. I may get a maternity coat if this January is like the last 2, though. I don't think I can get away with my previous strategy in -15 before wind chill weather!

  • I have had a January baby before and did as PP. I just used my regular coat and didn't button it. I was always so hot from baby. But I never was outside for long periods of time, except for when I got my tree and I was fine. Oh, I live in western NY where we get pretty bad winters as well.

  • I live in upstate ny and this will be my third late January/early February baby.
Get a good set of winter boots with fabulous traction. Something like sorrel or hunter. They're expensive but our center if gravity will be thrown off and the biggest concern for a woman pg in the winter is falling (on ice) and having placental abruption (where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall). So be careful with jogging in the winter. Not saying don't do it just be mindful of the ice and our clumsy uncoordinated full term bodies.
As for jacket. I've never purchased a maternity winter coat. I've always used a northface Denali fleece. I can't zip it at the end but its definitely warm enough.
  • This is my first winter baby and I'm in ND so I've thought about this. I doubt I'll buy anything maternity, just wear my fleeces or coats unbuttoned or borrow DH's! My snow pants I can wear unbuttoned but honestly by the time I'm too big to fit in them I doubt I'll be doing much in the snow.
I'll be inside at the gym if I'm going to stay active!

  • I seem to be the opposite... I feel colder carrying this baby :(( the great thing about living in FL for some time before I moved here, boots...winter coats... All so cheap there because nobody needs winter clothes besides a nice heavy jacket. Lol I made sure I went shopping before I came to STL.

Like I previously mentioned I bought this $200 Columbia jacket for $98 down there. Winter boots, warm socks, scarves, and gloves for all so cheap. When I was pregnant with DS I had the hardest time finding pants that would fit!! Leggings aren't going to be warm enough for me here

I have no advice for you on where to buy clothes, I just want to say this thread threw me! I keep forgetting its summer now in the U.S. As its winter in Australia! And we Southern Hemisphere ladies are all due in the height of summer! So weird!
  • I'm just going to layer layer layer. I'm never outside for too long, just a few minutes while I walk to work after parking my car. I'll survive.

I know Motherhood Maternity gets decent outerwear closer to August/September (I'm in Maine so I know the feeling). I was pregnant during the winter last time too and their coats are amazing (EDD is 2 weeks before EDD with my first so they accommodate the bump). This is what I'm able to find right this second for outerwear though.

Not seeing anything for snow pants. I usually put on a nice pair of sweatpants that have a closed ankle under my regular pants so I have an extra layer of protection.
