Nightly baby grunting

My almost 3 week old has started grunting at night every time he is put in his bassinet. He will go for hours and sounds so uncomfortable...not to mention it keeps my husband and I up. During the day I put him in a rock n play which is elevated and he sleeps soundly but I'm hesitant to put him in this at night. I tried elevating his bassinet slightly tonight but it doesn't seem to help. Any recommendations or thoughts?

    Is he sleeping while grunting? If so, he must not be that uncomfortable or he would be crying.

    This is exactly why both my kids slept in their own rooms starting at a month old. They are too loud! lol

    My daughter slept in her RnP at night until she was 4 months old. She slept like a champ in it too. I don't see a problem with letting your LO sleep in it at night as long as there aren't loose blankets and his head is rounding out fine.

    My baby grunts at night as well but not all night. We figured that he does it more when he is gassy, which is common with infants. If he is not crying I wouldn't stress too much about it. Also, I was just reading here on the bump that it is not a good idea to lets infants sleep for long periods of times in elevated positions as it may constrict their air ways. Baby's sleeping flat on their back is most recommended and it helps reduce SIDS. Hopefully the grunting is just a phase.

    Both my kids were grunters.  It's totally normal, but definitely annoying because it's so loud!  I moved them each to their own room around 8 weeks because it was keeping me up at night.

    There's really nothing you can do about it, they grow out of it eventually.

    To answer OP'S question: grunting sounds are very normal in newborns. Crying and coughing along with grunting would make me believe something's going on though.
