Starting a new job and telling work?

I am 15 weeks pregnant and I am starting a new job in 2 weeks... They currently don't know I am pregnant... When is the best time to tell them? I am so nervous but wasn't sure if they would pick me for the job if they knew I will be having to take maternity leave before I'm there for a year...

Re: Starting a new job and telling work?

  • I am starting a new job on Monday and I told them during the hiring process, so for me, telling them ASAP is best. They might surprise you with their sympathy.

  • I started a new job around two weeks ago and told them about 6 days ago.

I lied and said I had only just found out.. Which is kinda true, I found out just before my interview.

She was cool about it but then again they have to be cool! If they try to get rid of you then they could be in big trouble.

I completely agree about not telling them before you actually get the job though because they could make up some lame excuse.

    Good luck hun!

I agree with PP. You can go the honest route and tell them at the interview, but don't be surprised if you do not get the job. I got hired at a job that I already worked for two years, and he hired me after a two minute "interview" and I really didn't want to tell him. I told him less than a week after I started working only because some people were spreading the rumor and had people coming up to me asking why I didn't tell them (when I don't even know who they were) so I told my boss I would rather him hear it from me than from someone else. And he also asked how long I had known about the pregnancy, but I said I knew for a while because I had known him previously. I would advise you fib when you are answering this question for a new boss (if you want of course) ... you don't know what their reaction is going to be. Tell when you are comfortable where you are working and your new boss.
  • Yes same here. I am 15 weeks and I start a new job in 2 weeks. I emailed them about a week ago to let them know when I would be out for maternity leave. When they actually gave me an offer I was only 7-8 weeks so it was too early to say anything. I let them know in writing so there's a complete record of my telling them after the offer, etc. I was very nervous but they seemed cool with it. Of course they have to be. Definitely don't tell them before you actually get hired! Unless you're like 7 months preggo and totally obvious.

I told my new employer in the interview and they were totally fine with it. Of course it's a contract position so I don't get maternity leave so of course they don't really care. I can see why you didn't tell them in the interview though. But considering you will be in your second trimester I think you should tell them soon because you will begin to show.
