Baby acne

Ugh... My poor LO's face... I know it's normal and will go away without treatment but have any of you found any products helpful in reducing it? I realize it looks painful and it isn't... Someone recommended mustela products... Ever use them?

Re: Baby acne

  • It's terrible. She has it all over and bright yellow crusts near her nose and up it. I've just been washing her face with water daily and patting dry. I even took her to the doctor because I was convinced it was infected...ugh. I saw a baking soda and water paste on Pinterest to use but it started looking better this AM.

The worst is all my son's little friends kept asking why she has bruises all over her face :(
  • i remember reading somewhere that breast milk helps, like applying it on their skin and letting it dry. it was in a long list of uses for breastmilk.
you could always look that up/check it out (if you guys are still breastfeeding, too tired to remember if you are or not)
  • I put coconut oil on once and it got angry and inflamed and she was miserable. She did look like a greased piggy lol

  • I've put a tiny bit of breast milk on his cheeks and they look better!
  • I smear some breastmilk on it and it helps
  • Will try the breastmilk. It's in her scalp now too. And ear. I pick the yellow crust out of her ears and nose and she gets so mad :((

Yep, that's what I've heard (and done with success); squirt or somehow get breast milk on Baby's face (if you're nursing or have milk, anyhow). Seriously-- this booby milk is powerful!

I've tried the boob juice without much improvement, and just tried the baking soda and water trick today, and it's seemed to have helped. LO only has a few good ones across his cheeks, but it breaks my heart!

Update, baking soda and water seems to be working!

  • My baby has terrible acne all over his face, in his ear, on his scalp and he's starting to break out on his shoulders/chest. We saw his pediatrician yesterday and she advised applying hydrocortisone 1% 2x/day and bacitracin 2x/day, as well as Eucerin as needed. Haven't seen any changes yet, but it's only been 24 hours.
  • My ped told me to use dove soap. This was yesterday so we haven't tried it yet.

Supposedly breast feeding makes acne worse and keeps it around for longer due to hormones.... Great.... People who are dealing with it (my LO's is just awful and so red!) are you breast or formula feeding? I am EBF and feel so bad that her face is so red and blotchy...
  • EBF...blotchy as all get out. And has cradle cap. Gonna buy some t-gel shampoo for the scalp today.

  • I'm gonna ask my pedi on Tuesday and I'll report back here if anything of interest!

I am EBF and my little ones acne has been pretty bad. I started putting breastmilk on it though (as suggested here) and it does seem to be getting better, but it also is supposed to get better on its own over time so I can't say if it's a coincidence or not.
  • So in addition to the acne she has heat rash all over her face. I physically cannot keep this girl cool. She runs 99.1F to begin with and just sweats regardless of where we put her. I don't know how to keep her cool. She only wears a onesie if that. She will still feel so warm yet will have cold toes.

Try fever patches? They are just a cooling gel patch. I put it on the back of my neck and wrists when we go to husbands village in Sumatra. Going to try the BM idea, seems to be worse after a feed

I also notice it's worse after a feed.

I tried BM after reading PP. I only put it on her face to test it out. It seems to be working. Her entire head and neck are covered with acne and the back of her ears are a huge mess! :(( I plan to rub BM on her head and ears the next few days. Anything will be a huge improvement. I can't get over how bad her ears are! She has yellowish stuff on the collar of her shirts from the oozing... It's gross. I feel so bad for her!
  • @TheEA LO has that yellow crust on her acne too, her nose, and in her ears. So gross.

  • I've just been gently washing LO with his Shea Moisture Baby shampoo & body wash and it makes his acne look much better within a couple of hours, you can get it at Target for about $10
  • Just a chime in on the bfing possibly causing worse acne - my LOs diet is majority formula, with some breastmilk - unknown how much he gets while on the boob. Not enough to fill him up enough to not need 1 & 1/2 ounces (or more) of formula per feeding, anyway. He has a couple blemishes here and there, and a little field of bumps on the tip of his nose, but nothing like what it sounds like you guys are describing. So maybe there is something to this theory of breast milk causing worse acne. He is also only 12 days old, tho. So maybe that has something to do with it.

Gotta say tho, I feel bad for your LOs, but overall pretty good about the whole acne problem, cause I certainly can't spare any breast milk to put on his face (look on the bright side!)

  • My LO is 3 weeks old today and I've been reading this thread since it was started, but I haven't had any trouble with her having acne. BUT now she is starting to get some :( I guess I might as well continue to follow this thread since the information you mama's are sharing is now helpful and relevant to my LO. Maybe it won't get much worse :-S

@dancegurl1118 does your babe like baths? I've been putting my guy in the tub to splash around and cool down. He hates anything cool on him (no washcloth on face, etc., even when it was 102 degrees out - and we have no AC). But he LOVES being in the tub. I just don't use soap each time, so as not to dry him out - baby soap just 2-3 times/week. But baths 4-5 times/week.

ETA: his acne always looks better after this, too.

LO started getting acne around the 3 week mark. She'll be 1 month on Sunday and it's gotten worse -- seeing it mostly on her cheeks and chin. I wish there was something I could do for her but hoping it'll clear up on its own.
  • @virginiaunicorn11 her acne gets worse after the bath! We use soap sparingly.

I used the t-gel shampoo today. She didn't mind at all. It loosened up the cradle cap which now looks like the worst dandruff ever :). Her acne looks better but she just has what looks like heat rash on her face and back. This girls skin, yikes!

How's the baby acne going for everyone?

LO has gotten worse, unfortunately. We're now seeing the yellow crust on her nose and ears. We see her pedi on Thursday and I almost hate to wait that long because her poor face looks so bad :(
  • You all have to use breastmilk ! It works like a charm
  • @katyqv the acne itself is cleared (took about a week and a half, just cleaned with a warm washcloth daily), but has cradle cap now. Yellow crust on her forehead and still around her nose and in her ears like before. I just leave the crust, it's just sebaceous glands. Still working on the cradle cap but it's not too too bad and her hair hides most of it so I'm not too worried. Save yourself the copay at the doctors -- I wish I did. It was a 5 min appointment and she said "yeah that's baby acne its self limiting bye" ...$30 later.

  • My LO isn't crusting but she had a ton of bumps & new ones coming up. Our pedi (at our 1 month) said it was normal & cycling through. Seemed to think it would go away within a month.
  • katyqvkatyqv member
@dancegurl1118 yeah, I'm going to just hold out until her appt Thurs and keep washing her face daily.

Glad to hear your LO has cleared up. Seems like this is a case of "it gets worse before it gets better."
  • yeah my LO's acne has largely disappeared. happened during week 5. he has cradle cap just on the crown of his head now. and @dancegurl1118 he gets heat rash all over him when he's in the Moby on a hot day. makes me feel so bad for him but he doesn't seem to mind much.
my niece has crazy sensitive skin. she didn't grow out of it, but they've found natural products that work, so it's a non-issue as long as they pay attention to soaps. Good luck with your little girl. She sounds fun - I respect the attitude!

I read that here, tried it, and her face was pretty cleared up the very next daY
  • Ours seem to have improved as the weeks went on - she is 7 weeks now.
