3rd Trimester

What are your thoughts are thoughts on membrane stripping at 41 weeks, to avoid an induction?

With my DD, we failed two NSTs at 41 weeks and were induced. My induction took 3 days, complete with my in-laws showing up uninvited, so I really want to avoid a repeat of that experience. I am thinking about doing a membrane strip a couple of days prior to my scheduled NST, so that I can avoid the induction this time, or at least prep my cervix a little. Is it even worth the effort? Has anyone had success with a membrane strip? How long did it take to work?

  • I've heard of ppl it's worked for and ppl it hasn't. I had it done Wednesday at 39 weeks and 1 cm. It's now Sunday night and I'm still preggo. All I experienced was two days of spotting and bad period like cramping and now I'm back to exactly how I felt before the stripping. But it's worth a shot, you might get lucky.

  • Just how bad is the cramping? Did you feel that you had trouble sleeping because of it?

  • It's worth a shot but may not do anything. I only had mild cramping for an hour and labor didn't start.

  • I had a sweep with my third child and was in labour within the hour, but I had several with my 4th child starting from 39 weeks and she didn't come till 41 wks so I wud say sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't but I would always take the option if offered
  • Yeah, that's awesome. So not happening though!

  • My intial thought is.. intervention leads to more intervention. I personally would try some natural things first- nipple stimulation, sex, orgasm in general, physical activity etc. Not saying I wouldn't accept other techniques at some point...
  • Let me just tell you right off. Holy cow that hurts! I hope it works for you it didn't work for me. But I remember bleeding like a period after and almost punching the nurse lol
  • For me, it was pretty bad menstrual cramps the first day, slightly better the second day, then done. Had it done again this week as today is my due date, cramping wasn't as bad this time around and it's already gone after one day. The process didn't hurt as much this time around either. But no labor either.
  • I've had it done twice with this pregnancy and still no baby.! It's honestly not as effective as some people think. I don't even know why doctors offer doing it it just gives false hope.
  • I think everyone experiences these procedures very differently, so there's really no telling for you.
For me, I was induced at 38 weeks with my son Ethan due to high blood pressure. I was lucky because it was a relatively easy process. For my daughter, my Dr. stripped my membranes at my 39 week appointment. I hadn't been experiencing any contractions up until that appointment. I remember vividly contracting on the elevator down after that visit. By the time I got home, I was contracting 3-4 minutes apart, but they were not strong. After waiting some hours, I went to the hospital, where they admitted me and I had my daughter the next morning around 5am.
    You never know, I guess!
( I will say, the membrane stripping, was very painful for me.)

I had my membranes stripped twice during my first pregnancy and it didn't work either time. Baby will come when he or she is ready. You can usually safely go up to 42 weeks before needing to be induced.
  • I had mine stripped for both my girls. First one, I had been in the hospital for a day and a half with them trying to use the gel to soften the cervix with no progress. Within 30 min of membranes being stripped, my water broke and I was on my way. My second one they stripped the membranes the day before my due date during my dr visit and I had my little girl in my arms 24 hours later.

I'm 39 weeks and going to ask them to do it at my next visit if I don't have any action before then!
  • They stripped mine 3 times after dd1 edd and nothing. It works for some, doesn't work for others. If you have group b strep you should avoid having membranes stripped because the antibiotics are not 100% effective
  • My sister had hers done last Monday, she's due tomorrow and set to be induced tomorrow due to GD. When she had her stripped she said she had some minor cramping/uncomfortable feeling and some spotting, but still no baby !
