Sex of the baby

I am dying to know the sex of the baby but my doctor couldn't tell me anything at 13w. I'm hoping you can help me!
I found this picture (left) on the web of boy parts and it seems like my baby (right) has a similar thing between its legs? :)

  • At 13 weeks both female and male look the same... I would wait till you have an anatomy scan if they will tell you then, they don't here ... Or choose an elective sex scan. I never found out with my first and it was amazing when they said "it's a boy". This time we did an elective sex scan because they won't tell us during or anatomy scan.
  • It looks like a crab to me. But I don't have a guess as to whether it's a male or female crustacean.
  • You can get a blood test if you are really needing to know that bad and can't wait. I would do some lurking on this board first as there are 3 other posts on here from the last day on same topic- and as you can see some girls are very heated/opinionated on this topic and already jumping down your throat (just in case you were wondering why such brash responses right away)!

No, no, no. Those blood tests are for detecting chromosomal abnormalities. Because they are looking at fetal chromosomes, AS A BONUS, they can tell you the sex. But that is NOT the reason for those tests. Don't waste medical resources like that.
This!!!!! Also, from my understanding they can only be done around the 10 week mark(??) can't be done at anytime.

I did not say that is the reason for getting the test... A lot people have all the other tests early on anyway. I do not know the timing and sounds like you don't either so she can at least do her research..

BECAUSE THEY ARE CONSIDERED HIGH RISK FOR FETAL ABNORMALITIES.

It wastes resources and makes the results take longer when impatient women take these tests just to find out the baby's sex. Learn patience.

I have patience, I'm team green thank you very much. Maybe you should be a lobbyist for pregnancy care since you seem so passionate that your opinions are all that matter. I bet you have no known facts that support the 'it takes longer to get test back' comment. Not everything today is done for necessity, things are created for convenience in today's world. Whether you like it or not, people can do what they want. No one is asking for your approval.

I had the test done and declined to know the sex of my baby.  My insurance paid for this test because of risk factors I had.  Without that I would have had to pay for it out of pocket.  It cost 4 figures.  To even suggest to someone that they look into it just because they want to know the sex of their baby a few weeks earlier is a little crazy.  You're right about convenience, test like these are used (mostly illegally) in other countries to find out the sex for selective abortions.  These test should only ever be used out of necessity. Not that long ago EVERYONE had to wait till birth to find out what they were having.

Obviously everyone had to wait 25+ years ago thank you for stating the obvious. Like I said I am waiting so I don't know the costs of these tests, but the OP is fully capable of making her own decision and obviously came on here looking for options. Again, I highly doubt your approval.

Who in the world is saying anything about approval.  Im not looking for any.  I was sharing my experience and opinion.  So again, even suggesting these test that you appear to know nothing about, to someone to "look into" or "research" because they want to know the sex of their baby earlier is nuts.

OP seriously save yourself from being looked at crazy by your doctor and their staff.  DO NOT go in there asking for/about this test because you want to know what you're having early.  Like PP said before it is for looking for abnormalities.  Trust me it was no fun sitting around waiting for those results.  When we went in to hear them penis or vagina was the last thing on our minds.

Just wait for the 20 week anatomy scan.  Hopefully baby will be cooperative.  If not try not to sweat it.  I was team green and it was very exciting finding out in the delivery room.  Even family members who were "upset" we didn't just find out, were giddy and excited when they got the call.  Everyone cried.  The energy was very different.
  • Where I'm from the doctors won't tell us the baby's sex AT ALL. Regardless if we are 10 weeks and have the blood test, 20 weeks at the anatomy scan or 39 weeks to check baby's position ... If we choose to find out we pay to go to UCbaby anytime after 18weeks !

My doctor will tell you "knowing the baby's sex is not necessary"
  • During my NT Scan the tech told me that my LO was 75% chance a boy. I had an emergency Anatomy Scan last week because of a testing issue and it was confirmed that I am indeed having a boy. I believe I had my NT at 12 weeks and my Anatomy Scan timing is between 16 weeks and 4 days and 17 weeks and 5 days, the OBs and the Techs have different numbers. That is my personal experience. If you want to ask then go ahead, but if they don't tell you or say they can't, it might be there policy and you may just have to wait until your Anatomy Scan when they check your LO's entire body.  In regards to the rude comments, I'd overlook look the ones that weren't informative. Also, this is the internet, so it may be possible that some of the nasty comments aren't really meant to be nasty....could just be how they were read...and then there are some that just are...but yeah, speak to your doc. Also, I didn't see in pics in your post.

  • @ambermariee20 Where are you from if you don't mind my asking? I find that really interesting. Is there a policy or something in place as to why that is? I'm just curious.

I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada !
The techs won't Give us any information at all ! The tech won't tell us anything at all about the ultrasound, we're not aloud to have cellphones in the rooms anymore due to people taking pics of the ultrasound.

I think it's related to abortion due to a specific sex I may be wrong though !
  • @ambermariee20 that is really interesting. I'm going to go look that up now. Either way, I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy.

My regular doctor sends me to a high-risk doctor's office for most of my ultrasounds and the doctors there usually give you a guess if you ask. With my first pregnancy the doctor correctly guessed female at 12 wks. With this 2nd one the doctor said at 13wks that he would bet money it is a boy. The blood test results confirmed their guesses. I assume they just have a lot of experience examining ultrasounds since they specialize in high-risk pregnancies. Their machines also have much better image quality than my regular doctor's. If you can't get the blood tests, don't worry, time will fly and you will have the 20week scan soon enough.
  • My ob does the gender determination ultrasound at 15weeks it's standard. I don't like the "guess my baby's private parts" posts either but that's no reason to be so freaking rude purple ----hormonal mommas :,D
  • We found out at 12 weeks. We are having a boy!

You can do a blood test in a weekish. It's usually offered to at risk or older moms as it scans for things like Down's syndrome. But it can give you sex results too. We didn't do it. But my friend did. She found out she's having a boy.
