Trying to Get Pregnant

Irregular first time ttc

So this is my first time ttc. I'm 24 and my husband is 26. We made the decision in late April, early May... so its not that weve been trying long. But I feel like there is so much information out there, and I get so confused.

I'm irregular on my cycles. I can have a 30 day cycle or a 70 day cycle (and it's not fun!). I've been trying to make sure that I'm doing BBT right, and I'm not sure I am. Sometimes it fluctuates in large intervals, sometimes it's consistant. And I'm not sure if I wake up at 7am and go back to sleep until 8 am (without getting out of bed) should I take my BBT then or wait until 8am...?!

I'm also trying wondfo test strip and have been getting two lines (but not yet a positive 2 dark lines) for about a week or so now. So I'm just curious if it's possible my irregular cycles could be affecting the test some how.

I haven't gone to see the obgyn yet, but my regular physician seems to think there isn't any issues with me. But, any ladies who also have irregular cycles or any suggestions, it's all welcome

Hello and welcome! I'm not a professional by any means, but a lot of your symptoms sound similar to mine (as a woman with PCOS). I have irregular cycles and several LH surges a month as indicated on OPKs. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm sure a lot of women on here can echo the pain you feel with irregular long cycles!

You should absolutely go see an OB to pinpoint the reason behind your irregularity. Continue temping--make sure you get a solid 3 hours of sleep before you test and take it at the same time each day. I'd also suggest grabbing a copy of TCOYF. Stay patient and strong! Good luck!

Seconding the comment on reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility - you will learn a lot about temping and charting and how to pinpoint ovulation using other methods like OPKs and checking CM.

The best way to make sure you're getting the most accurate and consistent reading of your BBT is to set an alarm for earlier in the morning than you would usually wake up, and at the same time every day. This ensures that you are (usually) waking up at the same time with a good amount of sleep, and not just when you happen to wake up. Good luck!

  • I don't have any recent charts to share but I too had some kind of jagged looking ones when I tracked BBT a couple years ago. It can be disconcerting but even a wacky looking chart can reveal a trend that FF will pick up on.

I did the same as PP where I set an early alarm each day and temped and then on some days (weekends, days off, etc) I went back to sleep and recorded the temp in FF when I got up for real. I used a thermometer that remembers your last temp so that was convenient to this plan as well. I want to say it was a mabis one from Wal Mart.

  • I am a temping newbie and just read your post about mouth breathing. I too am a mouth breather and my first chart so far looks crazy! Vaginal temping is the way to go?

  • I'm from Texas, too. Howdy!

These ladies have give you great advice, but I wanted to add just a couple of things:

    1. Do you use Fertility Friend to track your BBT? It's the app most of us use and makes things pretty easy for you. It also has some great tutorials that can clear up a lot of your questions. We can also take a look at your chart and help you interpret it if you aren't sure about FF's analysis. A lot of us enjoy looking at charts.

    2. Setting an alarm to temp has really helped me. I temps were really jagged before I did that.

  • Every woman is different, but even with jagged chart I had a clear temp shift last month, so it is possible! There's a link in my signature.

Echoing PPs, if you haven't read Taking Chart of Your Fertility yet, do it. It's a quick, easy read and totally changed the TTC game for me.
  • Hello from Texas also! I do not have any additional advice, I think these other ladies covered it for you. I hope it works out for you soon!

I have irregular and/or long cycles (33, & 53 days long) . I'm breast feeding though-- so I have a reason. You might try for 6 months & then ask your OB to do a hormone panel.

  • @PrimRoseMama I'm in DFW now, but Pflugerville is home! I was just down there visiting this last weekend. I didn't realize we had so many Texas ladies!

OP- I originally started temping orally and my temps were all over the map, but vaginally they're much more consistent. I'm not so much a mouth breather, but I am definitely a night time drinker. I have to have a bottle of water all the time and that effects my BBT.  If this cycle is a bust for you I'd try vaginally at the beginning of your next cycle.

  • I get up at 6am for work so I just set my alarm for 6am every day- even weekends. It sucks but it keeps my temp taking consistent. Maybe try setting an alarm if it is hard for you to regularly temp.

YAAAAAY (I'm just now getting notifications for this oh the joys!!! I don't think the phone app likes me much!!  :((  )

And Hello from the Big D (we actually live just outside Dallas)
    >:D<

I know I mouth breath while sleeping, and never considered that an issue!! I usually try to wake up at 8AM for work (and on my days off just from habit) and take it then. Some days, like the last couple, I wake up SUPER early (for me HAHA) randomly and can't go back to sleep, so I end up taking it at 7 or 730.

I do use F.F. LOVE IT. I did finally detect the O day! (WOOT WOOT \:D/  ) But I think I am going to look into vaginally temping to see if it'll help regulate those pesky numbers!

How is everyone else coming along in their luck?!

  • Hello! I agree with the PPs. I have irregular cycles too. I was recently told I am borderline hypothyroid and I suspect that has something to do with it. My cycles range from 28 to 62 days, in the last few years. I go to the GYN on Friday and will be bringing up my concerns.

However, everyone is different. Your reasons for irregular cycles may not be the same as mine. It could be PCOS, hypothyroidism, or something else.

    Good luck!

HAHA At this point this should be a If you're from Texas board!

hunnybunny17 I just started a new cycle 3 days ago, and so this is the first time in a long time that I've had consecutive cycles that weren't really really short or really really long. I'm kind of excited  :D   But I also feel like it could be that I've lost a lot of weight in the last 7 months, and am currently holding that weight for the time being. I'm trying to hold off on the gyn for a few months (unless we get a BFP) to see if this holding my weight continues with a normal cycle (for me).
