Baby Ponchos and other Inventions

Now that we are caring for our LOs, what inventions have you dreamed up that SHOULD exist but don't seem to?

Bonus points if you solve another poster's problem by pointing them to a product that does exist!

I wish there was a cape for when my baby eats because she soaks every piece of clothing with her heinous spit up. We use a bib but she is great at spitting distance or right off the side of the bib.

I am thinking like those capes you wear when you get your hair cut, but with arm holes since LO can't handle inaccessible hands...

  • I was just telling my husband they need to make an invention where we can sleep with our babies safely on our chest or in our arms. This is where my baby sleeps the best and I think something like a Hammock where they could not fall out the side would do.?

@cillymama I just bought a pack of burpy bibs - thanks!

I also need there to be a phone app that DH and I can both share and log into to log feeds and bowel movements. We share duties and it's hard to know when LOs last feed was if the other person is asleep. Right now we are trying to track on a piece of paper on a cork board.

Ooh, ooh! I have an app that records feedings and diapers (and sleep and weight if you so desire) and it does allow you to synch with another device. My version is free but for unlimited synching you do have to pay a 'small fee' (that's what it says. Since I'm not synching I haven't looked up the price). Its called Feed Baby by Penquin Apps. I have a Samsung, but I'm pretty sure its available for iPhone, too. It also will make charts out of your data... It does way more than I use it for. I dig it.

    Cool, I'll check it out!
  • @hoodoll82 I use BabyConnect and love it! It tracks everything. Only downside is its 4.99 per person, but we have used it since the day we got home and it's fantastic. It is so easy to just open the app in the middle of the night and see it's been 5 hours so I should start getting myself ready to feed. It's displayed right on the main screen and makes it easy!

Also it tells me I used 296 diapers last month and nursed for 110 hours. Ugh.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • A way to measure how much breastmilk goes in (a gauge/nipple shield) and way to measure the amount that is spit up. Also, a home scanner that you can use to determine exactly why your baby is crying. A slow reclining crib that starts as a bucket/rock and play form, but like an adjustable bed, opens and flattens into a safe crib. Get the baby to sleep and get them used to a crib.
We rented a scale from a lactation consultant so we can measure our baby before and after nursing to determine how many ounces she took in.

Wow, I never considered that....do you find it's easy/works well?  I'm struggling breastfeeding, and lo not gaining weight, and this might help.

@CanadaMom17, it is easy, just adds an extra step to your routine though (just need to put LO on the baby scale, press some buttons to get the initial weight, then after feeding put her back on the scale).  Our LO wasn't back to her birth weight yet by 2 weeks and wasn't gaining as quickly as the doctors wanted to see, so they were pushing me to use formula and thus making me think I didn't have enough milk for her.  Very frustrating and emotional of course.

The scale helped give me the peace of mind of what she actually was getting from me (I tried pumping but only a few drops would get pumped...which doesn't mean that's all I had, but it still stressed me out).  And it helped me know when I needed to coax her to eat more in order to get to the daily goal of ounces.

I highly recommend trying to rent one of these baby scales if anyone is concerned they don't have enough supply.  Even if it ends up someone does have a supply issue, at least they know where things are at with what LO gets.  And for those who actually don't have a supply issue, it can help you stop worrying.

Edit to add...we're not planning to use this scale forever, just to help us get on track with her weight gain.
  • Were is that baby scanner when you need it? Also, going off of @mtav22 I keep wishing I could pump laying down.
  • You are describing a snuggle. Cape with arm holes
  • A Bapron! (Baby apron)

I would love an infant scale- would also spare me having to weigh myself (and then again with LO) to see the gain. Ouch!

Have you tried Total Baby? It syncs between phones. It is great!

  • Agree with @mcknzzee, being able to pump while laying down would be phenomenal!!

@hoodoll82 I use MammaBaby for the iPhone and DH and I love it! It takes the who changed/fed LO last guessing out of the equation, and it has handy charts too!

  • Hi guys, to circle back, we tried out both FeedBaby and BabyConnect and ultimately went with BabyConnect. The syncing option is much better. We did pay for the one-time upgrade but it was worth it!

I was told not to do the weigh ins yourself with lo. If you eat or drink anything while you feed, it will throw it off. Plus, you lose what they gain.

A wireless, hands free pump would be amazing so you can walk around the house or hold the baby while you pump. Also, to piggy back on the baby poncho DH and I thought up a cover for mom or dad to wear when burping the baby. We have had too many spit ups down our backs.
