Baby gear - carrier and diaper backpack

Hey all! Baby carriers....I feel like having a winter infant, I really won't use one...but have heard other moms who act as if they couldn't function without. Who is getting one? What brand is comfy...and easy to put on??

Also, I know I want a diaper backpack with having to pack things for infant and 3 1/2 year old DS...anyone found one they love?

Re: Baby gear - carrier and diaper backpack

  • I got an Infantino Swift carrier at a garage sale.  I think it'll be great for on the go.  Only thing it does have that I'd like is the ability to wear on my back, as it's front only.  I debated on getting a wrap as well because they look more comfortable for a new born.  Maybe if I find a used one for cheap.  I'd really hate to spend $40-50 on something baby may or may not like and will only use for a few months.

  • I have 3 on my registry - moby, k'tan and an ergo 360. I plan on using the first two when baby is still small and switching to the ergo later. I have heard really good things about the 360 and I especially like that it's 4 positions.
  • I am actually curious about this too. How do you all manage baby carriers over heavier clothing, like sweaters and jackets? I'd like to take the baby in the carrier while I walk the dog each day. I registered for a k'tan but am wondering if a different carrier would be better for cooler weather.
  • I couldn't have survived with out my Moby wrap with DS. he was a winter baby, so it was nice to keep him against me and in the warmth of the carrier, and it kept him happy being snuggled on mama. I used it until he was 15 months old. Plan to use one for this little one too.

  • We have the k'tan from dd1 1 and I loved it. For a while it was the only way I could get grocery shopping done (as I imagine it'll be having two now) and also to accomplish simple housework tasks when all dd1 wanted was to be held. Again I imagine with two it will be a life saver as dd1 will want my attention or simply to play outside (we live in central Florida) and this will free up my hands to do things with her but help dd2 to feel close and secure to me.
  • Carrier- I almost think winter might be better for one since you will not be wanting to walk outside with stroller especially if snow. The carrier I think would be nice if wanting to run in quick to a store or just get things done around the house hands free I've heard is nice. I got the baby bjorn used from a lady in my neighborhood for $5. Feels comfy to me so we will see!

Diaper bag- I got the Ju ju be BFF bag it's a messenger, top handle and backpack! Sis in law said great for with toddlers and hands free. It's machine washable. Pricier but I heard worth it as it will last forever where other ones break.

Did you find the Moby was easy to put on/load baby by yourself? That's the one complaint I read over and over with carriers in general is that it's like a team thing to get loaded up haha

I've looked at this bag too. It's the one on my registry now...but was curious if it was worth the money. Good to hear you like it :)
  • Tula!!!! It's so comfy cute and quality! I use mine all of the time in the house and around town. It's expensive but I don't use a stroller so it's all good.
  • We registered for a Tula, too! A friend also gave us a moby wrap.

My husband got this backpack and so far he loves it (obviously has yet to be road tested, but we've heard great things). It's got a TON of storage, so would be easy to pack items in there for baby and toddler!

  • I got an Ergo360 and a wrap that's like a shirt as you don't have to tie it all up! I've only practiced with a stuffed animal (a hippo!) but I love them and plan on using them as much as possible. plus they were both gifts from the family! I did buy the infant insert myself though as they forgot lol. I love that the 360 can be facing out now, it's my husbands favorite position to carry the kids and look "cool" ;) haha
  • I have a K'Tan for when baby is tiny and then a Tula for when they are a bit bigger. I highly recommend a Tula over an Ergo!!!
  • I have an Ergo that I was given when DS was born, as well as a mei tai. I plan to use the Ergo though if I found a wrap that's a good enough deal, I might get one for the newborn stage.

I feel like with 2 kids, I'll need to wear the little one!

I never felt like the Ergo was hard to put on when I was using it to front carry. It was trickier to back carry, though DS got to the point I could put him on my back like I was giving him a piggy back ride and pull the Ergo up around him.

I'd love the 360 though, because of being able to carry forward-facing!

As for a backpack, I've seen moms in my playgroup who just use a regular backpack as a diaper bag. You don't necessarily need a diaper-specific bag, just one that has plenty of pockets and is easy to get things out of.

  • I've heard amazing things about the ergo 360, but the downfall is how hot you & the baby can get (especially with the infant insert) I plan on baby wearing because we also have a 7 year old and a 2 year old & I don't know how I came across it but the Lillebaby carrier seems to be just as good, if not better, than the 360. It has an "airflow" mesh to keep you and baby cooler, better lumbar support for you as baby grows, doesn't require an infant insert, & it doesn't have Velcro (which is super loud on the 360 when taking off) it's cheaper too ($130ish compared to an ergo+infant insert) just another thought! (YouTube & Amazon reviews helped me too!)
  • I can get a k'tan for $15 so I'm going to give that a try. With my first I had a baby Bjorn and we all hated it.

  • I got a K'tan for when baby is small and a Tula for later. In addition to using it on walks, my friends tell me they can be great for around the house and hands free.
