Any fellow home birth Mommas out there?!

Wanting to see if there are any home birth Mommas on here! What's your name and were are you from?

Re: Any fellow home birth Mommas out there?!

  • I don't want to birth at home, but I would like to do it naturally in the hospital.  Thankfully the hospital I will deliver at and the OB/GYN office are very natural birth friendly.  DH thinks I'm crazy and swears I'm going to be begging for a epidural.  He also compared an OB to a cadillac and a midwife to a chevy and asked me which I would rather have.  Silly DH.

OOOOOH DH....no no no no.  Midwife births are amazing, even in a hospital.  I've been through two and I'm going to do it again this go around.  I've done unmedicated (first) and epidural (second) and you can do it if you want to.  You are woman, hear you roar.  You will actually be amazed at your strength and it seriously empowers you to do anything once you go through it (and seriously, no shame in giving into an epidural if your goal was unmedicated - birth pain is no joke.)

  • @skruhmin If you don't mind me asking, where did you deliver?  We will be in Loveland at McKee, but have the option of Good Sam in Lafayette.

Boulder Community in the past with Boulder Nurse Midwives, but they no longer practice, so the midwife who delivered my second recommended a mw at Avista Women's Care in Louisville.  I thought about doing Good Sam since my husband works for that company but I liked the recommendation and the fact that Avista is so close to work (I work in Interlocken right by Flatiron Crossing)

  • I'm very interested in home birthing! This is my first pregnancy, EDD 3/11. I'm currently reading Ina mae's book about natural childbirth and it sounds so empowering!! I'm a little worried about the reaction of family if we decide on a home birth... My mom is a former labor and delivery nurse and I already know she would be opposed. Hoping there's a nice middle ground where I can have a great birthing experience in an environment prepared for an emergency... Unfortunately there are no birthing centers in ohio.
  • @jmesue1030 Where are at in Ohio?

Are there any hospitals that are midwife friendly around you?

I would encourage you to check it out when you're checking out all of your options - especially so that you can have all information available to you when talking to your family about exactly which option you chose.

  • I think so, I will need to do some more research... It's still really early (6wks) I have my first dr apt Tuesday so hopefully I can learn more then. Definitely considering hiring a doula if we do a hospital birth too.

My labor nurse for #2 was a former doula and she was amazing.

  • Thanks for all of your help!!
  • I want to, but there are no midwives in my area that are covered by my insurance :( Nor are there any birthing centers or midwives in the hospitals. Stupid Arkansas. My first was born in Wyoming. Natural hospital birth with a doula. I had a midwife, but technically didn't really use her because her shift didn't start until 7 and I gave birth at 8:23am. She came in to see how I was doing and then went to the clinic downstairs to start her appts. She was on her way to my room when I delivered and my doula caught my baby. It was awesome!

Good news!  You have some options, but I have found that even some traditional health systems have options for natural birth.  Certainly talk to your doctor at your appt.  I also don't know your financial situation so it may depend on what your insurance covers or what you are able to afford.

  • @hullabaloo2016 thanks for the information!!!
  • I want to do a home birth but there's actually a clause in my lease that says I'm not allowed to have a planned home birth. I might look into doing it at my mom's house. My DH wants me in a hospital but I want to try natural at home.

  • I'm suddenly very intrigued by the idea of doing a med-free birth in a hospital, but idk how to decide between a midwife or obgyn. I think they both probably have their advantages. I don't know the first thing about insurance and midwives/doulas or how to hire one. I guess I need to do some research! And probably read Ina May's book.

  • @fwtx5815 Sadly, doulas are not covered by insurance :( I paid $600 for my first one, over 2-3 installments. In this area, though, they run about $800-$1000.

  • @blueeyedrose86 do most people have either a midwife or a doula, or both? Are they the same thing?

I could see it being easier to budget that $600ish if you don't need other medical personnel involved. But if it's in addition to all the other bills.. Meh :/

  • @fwtx5815 At a homebirth, you need a midwife. Doulas are optional. If I had a homebirth that was completely covered by my insurance (aside from some supplies), I would have a doula as well. They stay with you and support you through the whole labor. Mine was invaluable last time. DH was kind of like a deer in head lights. He tried to comfort me, but he didn't really know how, despite our labor classes.

  • A doula is a birth advocate...she will be there for you and whatever you need, she helps you through contractions, she massages. A doula can be used either midwife or OB attended birth. A doula is not medically trained; a certified nurse midwife and OB have several years of medical training. With a midwife, make sure she is a CNM.

  • I'm in New Zealand and it's a lot easier to have a home birth here I guess? My mid wife said there's actually a lot less paper work for a home birth compared to hospital! I'm very keen to have a home birth, my mum had two.
  • I live in Michigan pregnant with baby #4 and plan on having a home birth!! I have had all my other children at home as well! :)
