Bad cut on leg! Need advice!!!

So I got a bad rope burn from getting caught in my dogs runner. It was really painful and i treated by washing etc. After a few days the redness was all around the cut and it was warm to the touch and raised. However a scab had formed almost immediately after I got the cut/burn. After two days I called the doc for fear that all the surrounding redness and tenderness as well as swelling could be a sign of infection. I talked to the nurse who relayed what had happened. She said the doc didn't seem overly concerned but to make sure no red steaks were appearing and that the redness did spread. I have had it elevated most of the day but an so worried about the thought of an infection with the baby. Its freaking me out. Do I wait it out till Monday this happened wed afternoon?! Redness seems a little better and hasnt spread...no streaks but still hot to touch and painful only when walking and no pus or gross stuff! I would be worried if it was just me but now I have baby to protect!
Help!! I need advice... My husband doesn't seem too concerned but does think its a good size cut/burn.

If your doctor isn't concerned I would relax. Especially if it doesn't even look unusual. Redness and swelling is probably just normal healing. But your doctor will know better than anyone on here.

  • If you have no pus I don't think I'd be overly concerned. Also if you don't have the streaks or swelling then I would wait until Monday.
  • Normally I would say don't worry, but why don't you post a picture so that we can tell you if we think it looks horrific?
  • @BostonBaby1 I tried it won't let me attach it!! :((

I can tell you that this happened to me (long time ago, waaaay before babies were even on my radar). I had rope burn on the backs of both knees, and it took a while to heal. It hurts like hell, looks terrible, and my scabs cracked open and bled a few times (back of the knees, after all-you try walking with your legs completely bent). It got better after a while though, and now my scars aren't even noticeable. So if your doc isn't worried, I would say that you're going to be just fine :-)

The redness and heat are probably because you didn't just cut the skin, the friction probably damaged layers it didn't cause to break open. It sucks, but keep it clean and try to relax. Do what your doctor told you and keep a close eye on it. A good swab of neosprorin probably wouldn't hurt either.

    Edit-ugh. Freaking autocorrect.
  • Redness and swelling is normal anytime you tramatize your skin and underlying tissue. Your body sends lots of blood flow to the area to heal it. It's warmth that is spreading out from the site and white or greenish discharge you should be keeping your eye out for. Or if you start running a fever
  • I actually have a bad infection deep in my leg. Have had it for a about a month now. Dr wasn't too concerned, just prescribed two rounds of antibiotics safe for pregnancy and it is almost gone now. If it's not gone in another few days they will just have to cut it out.

So I would trust your Dr. If they aren't too concerned I would say it's fine.
  • If there is no horrible odour and not a lot of pus I would not be overly concerned. (Nurses opinion.) put some polysporin on it to prevent infection.
  • You just need to keep it clean with regular soap and water for now. The fact that it's started to scab already shows its starting heal. Sometimes it will get a little redness around the scab and that's okay. Just keep it clean and open to the air to heal! If it's not open or doesn't look infected I usually don't recommend my patients use antibiotic ointments. Won't necessarily hurt- just don't think it's necessary.
