To be induced at 39 weeks.

The doctors let me know that they would like to induce at 39 weeks, because I'm a type a1 diabetic which means I use diet and medication to control my gestational diabetes.
At first I was excited. Yay the baby is coming early! One less week of waiting.
But I'm kinda bumming about it now. I won't get to do the "honey the baby's coming" and I hate that I have to pick the babies birthday. I want the baby to come when it's meant to come :/
I'm usually the glass is half full, but I'm feeling pretty disappointed. I know I'm the grand scheme of things this won't matter. I'll have a beautiful healthy baby and I'll be so happy. But for now, I'm sad that I'll miss out on that part.
Just wanted to share.

  • You might get to have that part still. You never know. I went into labor on my own at 38w4d with DD and she arrived at week 39 on the dot. You could very well go into labor on your own. I got to do the "honey, the baby is coming" thing with DH, and it didn't have the same cinematic value I anticipated :) It was kind of like, "Okay, let me grab some water and a snack." Womp womp ;)
Haha, that sounds like my ever-practical husband: "But there won't be food there, so I better eat now..."

OP, my OB has offered me an induction at 39 weeks as well, and I am on the same fence as you about it. I feel like my OB's reasoning, that this is likely to be a big baby, isn't even as valid as your reasons. I don't have GD or DM, just a family/personal history of bigger babies. I still haven't decided which way to go...I think I'm hoping I don't have to decide, and that she comes on her own a bit before that.

  • I actually cried after our birth class because I'm at high risk of being induced or scheduled c-section. I felt like I'm likely to be robbed of all of the "normal" parts. I totally get how you're feeling!

@CaitLewis15 Just based on my past experience, my advice would be not to induce just because they think your baby is big. For one thing, they could be totally wrong about size. Many times they are- plus having a big baby isn't so bad. My son was 9.5 lb and birthed vaginally just fine.

But mainly, induction is NOT fun or ideal. I had to be induced for a medical reason and while I don't regret it and think it's often necessary, there is no way I want to be induced again unless medically necessary. If I was offered induction based on size, convenience, or even being at my due date (obviously not too far over), no way! Totally not worth the extra trouble. The induction process is fighting your body and the contractions on pitocin are horrible. I was lucky that my induction didn't lead to other interventions, but it's so much more likely that labor will stall and you end up with a c-section. Plus the whole process takes days.

Just my opinion, but I'd never voluntarily sign up for that again.

To the OP- if it's what's best for you and baby, it's the best choice. That was my experience and while I had the same concerns as you, it was worth it to end up with a healthy baby.
  • Awh! Hopefully you'll go before 39 weeks that way you can go naturally ! Ask your doctor about evening primrose oil capsules, some drs recommend them to help soften and efface your cervix after 36 weeks !!
  • If you are induced for whatever reason please see about getting your bishop score done first. It's a rating that measures the softness of your cervix, the position of it, and dilation and it can help predict the liklihood of success for the induction.

I have posted an article here before about induction for big babies. Let me know if any of you want to read it. It's fully cited with great references and it could be a useful tool if you hope to avoid induction.

My midwives routinely catch big babies with no issues. Upright laboring and pushing in alternative positions is key.

When there are medical reasons i totally understand but there are also ways to monitor if neither of you are in any immediate risk.
  • I am with you.  I have been told many times by my OB and my High risk Doc that I will be induced early and having a C section just because I was type 2 when I got pregnant.  My baby isnt huge due to Diabetes and I have had kept my blood sugars perfect the whole time but they still say it.  I am only 27 weeks right now we will see how she grows in the weeks to come.  Good luck mammas.
  • @komorebi I would be interested in reading that article! I don't think I saw it the first time you posted it.
  • @Crnota - I wouldn't suggest people avoid induction because of size. People should trust their doctors opinions. I was induced a week early due to my sons size being a concern for me to be able to deliver vaginally. My doctor's concerns were correct because even a week early he was still too big for me to deliver and I had an emergency c section.

I'll trust my doctor over anyone because that's why I chose to go to one; they have more experience in this than I do from googling.

OP though it's not ideal, once baby is here it won't matter how they got here as long as their safe and healthy.

I have had no one tell me I might be induced, but it makes me very nervous due to my sister's experience, and I would like to avoid it at all possible. That being said, there are some things you can do to help baby come a little earlier. The website spinningbabies.com has movements you can do (you should start now!) to help your body be "ready" for baby to move down. Also, everyone I have heard (at doula's recommendation) who tried nipple stimulation was able to induce labor naturally. Do you have a doula? You may want to consider it. I have been doing the movements from spinning babies for a few weeks just to increase my odds of going into labor naturally and to give my body the best chance possible. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the advice and support. I plan to talk to my doctor about it and make sure she knows that if at all possible I want to go naturally. I'll definitely be looking for ways to help my body along as best as I can. Ultimately, if the doctors think that it's a necessity to induce, then I will have made one of the many sacrifices that I will make as a mother. If I think about it as a way to take care of my baby, it will help me to be brave.
I hope all of you have smooth pregnancys as well as safe and easy deliveries :)

This isn't a Google search article. It's a comprehensive review of research. Fully cited. And it's a long read.
  • You never know, you still might go into labor naturally on your own! My son came on his own at exactly 38 weeks and even though I was induced with my daughter at 37 weeks, my doctor said that I wasn't likely to make it too many more days.

Another thing to consider when they want to induce you because of the baby's size, it might not only be for the health/ easy birth for the mom, but also the baby. There is a bit of concern that babies that are over a certain weight at birth potentially have higher blood sugars also. They may just want to make sure they are bringing the baby into the world in a more controlled environment. This way they are able to monitor blood sugars right off the bat for both mom and baby.
  • Also with diabetes it's also a concern of the size of the baby's shoulders.
Usually they do an ultrasound to check. The high risk ones are pretty accurate.
  • Not to be an alarmist, however, my mfm doctor stated that with Gestational Diabetes there is a faster degradation of the placenta which is why I was tokd I'd be induced at 39 weeks as well.
