Home Renovations Before Baby

You guys, I'm SO excited! We just had hardwood floors delivered today and installation will be in two weeks. Yaaayyy!!! Our old stinky pet-stained, cigarette residue (from previous owner) carpet needs to GO!

Do you have any plans to fix up your place before baby arrives?

Re: Home Renovations Before Baby

  • We don't have carpets in our house, thank goodness but we bought an old shit hole of a house and it needs ALOT of love! We are having all the floors in the 4 bedrooms upstairs sanded and polyurethaned before baby comes. They are a red oak so I'm hoping they look nice once they are done! Good luck to you!

  • We had started major renos in March and we're still in the middle of it. We are renovating our entire main floor. I can't wait for this to be done!
  • Yesss , renovating is all I can think about before I start buying lots of bulky stuff for the baby. We just moved in May and we are planning to start our major renovation in August. Since we are in a condo we can't do anything noisy after 5 pm and no weekends. Soooooo we have to take time off from work to do this , I hate condo living !
We started painting (not sure how much I should be around that , but I'm wearing a mask). In August we are doing wood floors and cabinets then bathrooms ,yikes we are doing it ourselves with the help of my parents.
We will need lots of luck ,
Good luck to you ! I'm so jealous you are having someone install for you !
  • We are in the process of renovating our entire house- literally. It's very stressful (and expensive!) but I can't wait for it to be done!!
  • We're getting carpet ripped out and laminate put in next week. I'm also gonna paint the new nursery, but I don't know if that counts :)

  • We moved into our house exactly a year ago. We were already TTGP so we immediately started work on the house. We even painted the nursery with a neutral color. There is only one thing left to do and that's just a weekend project. We even installed a bunch of bookcases in what will eventually be a playroom to store all of the baby paraphenalia. I want everything to have a place after the shower. Christmas is always crazy enough. I don't want to deal with too much last minute baby prep.
  • We just redid our bathroom in Jan. This whole month we've been renovating the nursery room. New drywall, new carpet, new baseboards, doors, trim, paint and custom builtins. The carpet is finally getting installed Tues and then it will be finished. So excited!!

  • We are remodeling our entire upstairs.  When it's done we will have a new master bedroom with bathroom attached, office/spare room, babies nursery, two large closet spaces in the upstairs landing area, one of which will be where our washer and dryer will be housed and new attic entry way stairs.  Our house was built in the late 1800's.  No insulation was put in, when the house was originally built.  We've ripped all the walls out, put up new sheetrock and are now in the process of painting and getting the rooms ready.  We still have floors to do and all of the window, floor, and ceiling trim.  My DH, FIL and a few of my uncles did all the wiring, and work.  I can not wait until it's done.  Hoping to be 90% done by November with everything.
  • We are considering redoing our bathroom but I can't decide if I'm ready to take the plunge financially before such a life changing event (FTM here). . Wishing now we had done this a year ago before maternity leave/child care, etc concerns were in the picture lol
  • Sounds like DH and I are not the only ones renovating before baby! Glad I'm not the only one! The only livable space right now is the bedroom. We have no a/c and we live in Texas. I mean it is actually not an unbearable summer this year! So weird! But our dreams and ideas are set in stone and we are on our way to it finally being done. I really think having the baby was a blessing and a boost to finally finish our home.

Good luck and well wishes to all you ladies and your house renovations!
  • DH and I just bought a house in May. Luckily it is only eight years old, so not much needs to be done. We are just re-painting the whole place, and that alone has been awful (luckily I have being pregnant as an excuse, so I've gotten out of most of the painting). I feel for you ladies who have to do an entire re-model!!
  • We just bought a house in may and we've (or DH and brother in law ) been renovating basically every bit of the downstairs: bathroom, kitchen, walls (paint ), restaining hardwood floor, window treatments, ripped out the carpet and put in new ones where they are, painting the trim of the house... Basically everything. Super stressful and expensive. Cant wait for it to be done!
  • We just need to do some paining and patching. I am usually the one that has to be DH moving and with me being Preggo and unable to paint, NOTHING is getting done. Driving me nuts!!!
  • Everyone in the house is getting a new room once baby is here so we have to move the whole house. Baby gets my son's nursery, ds gets the master bedroom which will also double as a playroom and dh and I are moving to the spare room upstairs which needs a lot of work.

I need to clear it out before we can even start the demo, it's going to be a long project so I need to get moving! Then we need to paint the walls in ds' new room and decorate. Fortunately in the nursery we will just be adding a little pink paint here and there if we have a girl for a navy, pink and grey room.
  • For the most part we are pretty lucky as our home is mostly done. The biggest issue is our windows. Most or all are original to our 1983 home. And the nursery's windows are the worst. This room has a beautiful bay window which is why we love it for the nursery but there is definitely fogging and seepage. So it is now a matter of if we want to replace all or just some of the (ie the nursery) windows.

Other than that, minor "I want" updates...
  • We closed on our house in May and planned our move in two weeks later so we could get the major fixes done before we had to deal with furniture. We refinished the floors, removed old nasty crumbling wallpaper, skimcoated plaster, and painted. I hope we can finish the kitchen soon but it was a lot easier to do everything when I was only 3 wks pregnant. Here's before and after of the dining room:

It feels so much better to have a project finished, @kemerson531 those wood floors are going to be so gorgeous!!
  • Not with this one, thank goodness, but we were at the beginning of gutting and re-finishing our walkout basement when I got KU with DS.  Poor DH had to finish it all himself.  We're talking demo down to bare walls and studs, then re-finishing 100% himself - flooring, electrical, plumbing, installing a bar area and new bathroom, ceiling, etc.  It was crazy!  This time, we only have to clean out a spare bedroom and paint.  Phew!

  • @bmahon0921 We are also living in upstairs in our bedrooms. We converted our spare room into a play room for DS. We are just finishing putting up the drywall on the main floor but are still waiting for it to be tapped and whatnot. We have a subfloor in but I'm not sure if we're replacing it before our new hardwood goes in. DH is an electrician so he did all the wiring, adding lights and adding/moving plugs. It is a disaster zone!

Oh and by "we" I mean DH!
  • I'm in this group! We are actually doing an addition- we are doubling the size of our house and the project is finally breaking ground and should be done here in a few months. We are in a small 900 square foot , 2 bedroom place. We are adding a master suite with a basement underneath which will contain an office, safe room (for my husbands guns and hunting gear) and a family room. We will also be adding a small mud room off the kitchen since we will need to extend that area to put in stairs to the basement. I am SO excited! We need the space.
  • Our house is a two-family. We are living in half of the 1br apartment on the first floor. The rest currently gutted to the studs! I'm hoping the major work is done mid-fall so we can move to the main part of the house. But, with construction, it's going to be close. At least, I hope we have the nursery all set up. And a fully finished bathroom!
  • We're defantly overhauling the room that will be the nursery. I'm thinking dutch doors to the nursery. Better than a baby gate! And green with ponies and cattle if it's a boy and lavender with ponies and butterflies if it's a girl.
  • I'm so excited for all of you that get to renovate! I drool every time I put on HGTV or the DIY network. We rent a small ranch house, so painting and decorating the nursery are really as extensive as I'm willing to go for a place we're only going to be at for the next two years. It's all very exciting though!

We bought a big old house 2 years ago and have redone pretty much every room so far. Last project before the baby gets here is to add a wall to their room, turning it into an actual bedroom off a hallway, instead of a shotgun room into our bedroom. It will also add a closet for them and a hall closet, bringing the grand total closet count to 2 (house built in 1870 and I didn't know living without closets would bug me sooo much :) ). My drywalling skills are a bit subpar, so I think this will be our first project we pay someone else to do, but I'll probaly do the lighting , or con dh into it if I'm not feeling up to ladders by the time we're ready for that step).
  • We've been renovating for some time now and will continue to do so after baby gets here. We rent from my mother in law and the home has potential but has been severally neglected. So far we've put new tile in the kitchen which I love. We've done all new windows, ceiling fans and removed most of the carpet and had central heat and air installed. Before baby arrives we plan to finish removing the carpets (I truly despise carpets!), sand and poly urathane the floors, paint the nursery, insulate the attic. Our contractor has some sanding and base boards to install yet. I believe that's it. For now lol. I should probably sand the dry wall in my dining room while I can. I hated the wall paper in that room so much I decided I'd rather look at bare dry wall
  • We bought our house a few months ago and are doing small things like having an entertainment center built around the fireplace.
  • We bought our house a year ago, so we're still doing projects here and there.  My big one before baby gets here is to install laminate wood floors in the basement, paint it, and finish decorating/putting it together.  It's a finished basement - bathroom, projector screen, etc etc., so it'll make a great family room/office area when it's actually all put together.  Beyond that, we have to turn the "cat room" (I'm a FTM, so yes, the cats currently have their "own room" w/ cat tree, etc right now) into the nursery ;)
  • Oh shit @Scullahoo make sure there isn't mold back there!
We took down wallpaper too but were able to skimcoat a top layer and then paint. Only a couple serious holes that went down to the lathe but no broken boards.
