Baby position

I am now almost 37 weeks. At 28 weeks i had an ultrasound and baby was head down. I haven't had (and won't have) any more ultrasounds. My doctor never really palpates my belly at appointments. He measures fundal height and listens for a heartbeat. I've been feeling movement a lot on the sides of my belly and am a little concerned about whether baby is still in the correct position. Does you doctor check position at your appointments?

Yes, I would just ask your dr to if they don't automatically

Do they do cervix checks? That's how my doctor checked to see my baby's position. She could feel her head through my cervix. I agree with pp though you should just ask.

Eta: my baby is head down but I still feel movement on both sides of my belly, I can feel her arms and legs all around. I had a feeling she flipped because I used to be able to feel her head and her butt on either side of my belly and then I started feeling limbs.

You can ask your doctor or midwife to check, I did at my appointment today. She just palpated my belly when we were measuring, nothing internal. But as PP said, my baby is head down and I feel her everywhere. She actually spun a little and is facing out, so I feel her hands and feet even more. Don't be afraid to ask!!
  • There are 2 docs at the practice I go to. One does palpations to check position and the other doesn't. I read on a previous post that some docs can tell position based on where they hear the heartbeat.
  • I didn't think he was head down because of where I feel movements and what I feel when he stretches. Felt like he was diagonal between my right side to my left hip. They checked Wednesday and he is most definitely head down in my pelvic area. Its his butt and feet I have been feeling (suspect he will be lanky like his daddy). All the movements are on my sides too. Doc should have no problem checking if you ask.
  • Yes, my midwives began palpating my stomach months ago and could tell me from 29 weeks that he was head down. Thankfully, he's still in that position. They usually tell me, if not, I ask.
  • Yes she does, and baby has been head down for weeks with his back against my back or his back to like my sides.. I've tried all the excersises my midwife has told me to try and see if he'll turn (with his back against the my belly button) but he's not budging [-(
  • Thanks for all of the responses. I have an appointment early next week. I will definately ask him to check then.
  • My baby has been head down since I was 30 weeks, they always check if the baby is still head down. I'm 36 weeks now and I feel the same movements like you. I would ask if they haven't checked you
  • My midwife typically feels and checks position of baby but yes she's been able to detect position just by listening to heartrate.
