Prescreening protein probleM

so I got the second part of my prescreening for downs and trisomy the test results came back negative which they said is great but they did find that there was a abnormal lower level of my protein serium in the baby. They said there is nothing I can do and that they would just do a growth scan at 20 weeks, on July 27, and then another growth scan at 32. I am just so nervous for my baby. I can't wait to have my 20 week us to see how he is growing. I have been feeling movement since 15 weeks, I'm hoping that's a great sign of regular growth .
I also read at 18 weeks I would be very hungry . I don't feel more hungry then normal . Maybe it's because I'm getting over a cold . I don't know , I just worry my will have a disability .

Re: Prescreening protein probleM

  • Hopefully everything will work out okay!
I didn't get any more hungry than usual and I'm at 20weeks now.

  • I don't know anything about this, but sending you well wishes and (((hugs)))
  • Are you talking about the PAPP-A protein? They found, at my 12-week nuchal US, that mine was in the 2nd percentile and I will need additional ultrasounds as well. It upped my risk for chromosomal abnormalities, because sometimes those are in tandem with a low protein, but I did further testing and I'm all clear. My anatomy scan is next Friday so I'll see how growth is going at that time.
For what it's worth, the Dr. told me this is a newer test, and a majority of women with the low protein have normal-sized babies. Maybe 25% have babies that are slightly smaller, and this has no effect on their eventual size. Also, it is not an issue you will have in all pregnancies - it's a 'just the way the cookie crumbles' this time around kind if thing. I wish you luck, keep me posted!

  • I have a low PAPP-A also. We did the noninvasive blood test and were negative for chromosomal abnormalities. My doctor wasn't too worried and ordered an extra 30 week ultrasound.
  • Thanks girls
For making me feel better !
  • The way I look at this, is if you want a positive spin, you get more ultrasounds! Lol. I have high BP and gestational diabetes, both of which suck, but the one upside I get is frequent every couple weeks ultrasounds where j get to see my LO :)

Just so I'm clear, you have no increased risk for the four trisomies?
  • @beccachartier In the algorithm they use to calculate your trisomy risk, a low PAPP-A protein does increase your risk. In my case, that's why I needed further testing. My other factors were low, so the risk wasn't very high overall, but had I been older or had different markers it would have calculated a higher risk.

My risk was .5% but low and behold my son has DS. I just don't know which trisomy or trisomies it particularly effects. All of my levels were normal (not to scare anyone. I'm just saying it happens. He also showed zero soft markers). I guess maybe I meant other than the PAPP-A. I think the heat is shrinking my brain. Haha!
