strange things that make you want to vomit

Before i was ever pregnant i would hear about things that made my friends feel sick while they were pregnant. Most of them being the smell or taste of certain foods. One of my friends would feel sick just hearing the word "eggs" let alone see them or smell them. I never got morning sickness but the smell of certain things can make me feel sick which is normal. The strange thing that has been making me want to vomit since i have been pregnant is brushing my teeth. Its not the taste of the toothpaste, in fact i like the minty flavor... Its the feel of the bristles. When i feel them on my teeth and my tongue it makes me gag and want to vomit. Its getting so bad to where i will start to dry heave for a good 30 seconds or so. Its kind of strange, i know. I want to know who else has a need or want to vomit from something strange.

Re: strange things that make you want to vomit

  • I haven't had anything like that yet, but my mom would get sick with my sister anytime she would see a red roof on any building because it reminded her or Pizza Hut. And anytime you would say my dads name, she'd hurl. He used to work in a New York deli and she would associate his name with the smell of all those meats. Could say husband around her, just couldn't say David! Lol

  • I hate eggs. Always have, I can't stand the texture.

I've gagged from day one brushing my teeth, first trimester it would make me throw up. Chicken is what was getting me until just recently. I used to meal prep and eat it twice a day every day so just the thought of it would make me wanna hurl. Luckily I've been able to stomach it and cook it in the last week so back to prepping I go. I've been really lucky with eggs and yogurt both. I eat two scrambled eggs on a whole wheat english muffin and a fruit smoothie with Greek vanilla yogurt daily. Nothing that I can really think of that gets me now that I'm this far along.
  • Lol the brushing teeth thing definetly. I use as little as i.can of toothpaste. Aftershave and strong deodorant too, people walk past my shop and say hi and i gag at their perfume. Lol. Anything tight over the throat like a scarf...gag. Steak too makes me gag.

Subway...even writing the word makes me want to puke! I can instantly smell the place as well. Eewwww right now but I usually don't mind the place when not pregnant.

Coughing fits that I have every morning.
  • Garlic and cooking meat! Can't stand either!
  • I've vomited after brushing my teeth twice this pregnancy. The sound of gagging made me gag more after coughing so hard I got sick.
  • Brushing my teeth, toilets (just looking at one), & the smell of cooking meat.
  • Sushi! My fiancé and I loved to go out for sushi one a week or so but this pregnancy has completely sqashed that.

The smell of dog food and dirty dishes. Eww. I have to hold my breath every time I feed the dog. Luckily my DH feeds him most of the time.
  • The skin on chicken makes me sick too... I used to like wings and it didnt bothere if it was crispy enough. Now i cant even do that.

Pretty much the whole first tri, it was brushing my teeth.  I wouldn't gag, I would just get this intense feeling of puke dread, like it could happen right that second, and have to stop for a moment.  Glad I wasn't alone with that!

Yes!! I used to be a skin first kind of girl, now I literally just pick it all off. My husband thinks I'm nuts.

Nick Jonas 'jealous' song, every time it comes on the radio I have to turn it off, and the old colour scheme I was going to do for the nursery. Associate both with when I felt sick in the first tri.

With my first it was the new car smell of our car mixed with grease smell coming in the intake from a nearby fast food restaurant. I get remnants of it with this one now.
  • Mint flavor makes me really nauseous, which makes brushing my teeth interesting...  also, having to spit things out (like spitting water into the sink) really makes me gag.  And sometimes sneezing makes me nauseous.  Or being nauseous makes me have to sneeze.  I can't figure out which comes first, it's really weird.

  • Cake, pancakes, anything that smells super sweet.  When I got out of the hospital* with my morning sickness bout, DH took me out for breakfast and I puked my pancakes in the diner bathroom, and again on the drive home.

*I had been sick, but was in denial about why I could be, got up to go the bathroom at 3am, fainted, and hit my head on the bathroom floor.  DH took me to the ER to make sure I was okay (we thought, who randomly faints when they just have a stomach bug?) and the doc told me I wasn't sick, just pregnant and dehydrated.  Whee, what a way to find out.

  • I still puke about once a week after brushing my teeth. On the other days I have to lay down and let me stomach settle afterwards to avoid throwing up. Showering can also throw me off. But my biggest trigger this pregnancy has been pee and poop- mostly my DDs. I'm pretty sure my husband thinks it's a ploy to get out of changing diapers but it gets me every time.

Also, bacon has been banned from our household until further notice. Which makes me sad because I used to love it. Now, I can't stand it :(
  • First time around it was Hotdogs! Just the word hotdog was enough to get me sick, or someone cooking and eating one was the worst!

This pregnancy it's leftovers! (which is making things really expensive) Just the idea of reheated food, or opening the Tupperware....I.....I just cant do it!

Brushing my teeth causes a vomit chain reaction every morning. Le sigh.

Brushing my teeth sometimes makes me gag, also, taking pills. I gag almost everytime. It makes taking my daily prenatal vitamin interesting to say the least.
  • Shredded chicken made me gag! Diced or a chicken breast was fine, just not shredded. Broccoli too, and this rice like pasta stuff. I'm better about shredded chicken now. I've slowly gotten over it, but broccoli is still a work in progress.
  • The smell of melted cheese and my SO just bought a new panini press and seems to just HAVE to make sandwiches all day on it.. :-&
  • I guess I'm the only one in this boat?! I hadn't thrown up yet but every time I clean my ears with cotton swabs the sensation to vomit comes. Even during second trimester when nothing else bothers me!
  • Apparently air just made me sick. For no reason whatsoever, I just had to run to the bathroom to be horrifically sick. At 24+4.

So no more air for me
  • I'm another one that has to be really careful about brushing my teeth. I have to lean forward over the sink and spit often. One day last week I was feeling especially tired and so I thought it'd be a great idea to sit on the bed while I brushed my teeth. I ended up violently getting sick afterwards and now brushing my teeth is worse than ever.

Also the smell of hummus is just the worst. I used to eat it all the time, but it started smelling awful before I even found out I was pregnant and I still can't handle the smell.

the smell of salmon or fish is DISGUSTING and makes me want to barf

  • gkfkgkfk member
I agree - any fish. And any fruit or veggies that arent completely fresh. Cannot do it!
  • Smelling my husband after work. Gets me everytime.
  • During first months it was the smell of our brand new car. I got the inside all dirty because I kept driving it with the windows down in Texas. Nowadays is Milk, it even sounds gross.
  • Deli meat. Ugh. Just the thought of it turns my stomach. If I smell it or touch it... Forget it!!
