December 2015 Moms

First time mom with 3 questions!!!!

1. I was heavier to start with, 5'5" 200 pounds. So far I've gained 7 pounds and I'm 17 weeks. I'm not worried so far because I know I'm going to gain weight. It's pretty inevitable. I was just wondering if there are any other moms out there in the same boat, and if their doctor has said anything about how much weight they should gain since they're already on the bigger side. I'm being told 15 pounds?

2. My tummy is getting darker more noticeable hair! What do I do?!?!

3. My mom has encouraged me to do aerobics or lamas (spelling?) classes. Thoughts and opinions.

Thanks in advance mommies to be!

Re: First time mom with 3 questions!!!!

  • I'll help where I can.
    2. Shave it!
    3. Aerobics are fantastic for pregnant women as long as you don't push yourself too hard. It'll help with an easier labor and recovery.

Healthy weight gain is USUALLY based on bmi. Talk with your OB, they well give you a recommended gain and maybe give you some tips. If you're concerned, maybe consider talking to a nutritionist to get an idea of how you should be eating, but make sure to keep your OB in the loop.
Lamaze classes are like childbirth classes, Google away and get some info! Your hospital probably offers some kind of childbirth classes, ask for info next time you have an appointment!
  • I started at a similar height and weight and I was told I should gain no more than 15-20lbs. My doctor said this is the amount of weight that can actually be attributed to baby, increased blood volume, placenta, etc.
  • If I shave it won't I have to continue to shave it for the rest of my life? It's like a guy's happy trail above my belly button. It wasn't has prominent before I got pregnant...
  • OP, I say wax it! I've been waxing the 7 dark hairs I get under my belly button since long before my pregnancy, and they do take much longer to grow in. If you don't want to buy an entire wax kit, buy the Nads facial waxing strips. They're the perfect size to catch those hairs, and you'll have enough to take you through your entire pregnancy.

  • I am very heavy. I was about 308 when I got pregnant and even at my weight my OB never really says anything about or against weight gain. I've gained about 8 pounds so far I'm 21 weeks. I think if you gain a ton they will say something but other than that if you are being healthy that's all that matters

I shave it. It has not gotten any worse, darker, or more hairy pregnant or not pregnant. The only difference is pregnant it grows back faster. I got my first belly hairs while pregnant with my second son (11 years ago). Those hairs never went away!!!

I was also on the heavier side having a few extra pounds (ok like 20). My OB has not said anything to me yet about limiting my weight gain (and for her safety I really hope she doesn't ever). I have gained a total of about 10 pounds with pregnancy. I do try and watch what I eat but sometimes (more often than not) I cave, I cave hard... Don't stress to much about it though really.

    Edited for clarity

  • Yes I started out a bit overweight and the recommended gain for me is 15-20. I would say wax it! And I am going to try aquacise classes in the shallow end that way I can keep my body temp even, also I am taking prenatal yoga. I like spinning as well but I did it a lot
Before pregnancy and they say to ease into exercise if you haven't been like walking, swimming etc. Also being in the water feels so great!
  • I know a friend who is on the bigger side and she is like 22 weeks and has only gained one pound.  She said she eats a lot healthier now that she is pregnancyt.

As for exercise, get as much as you can.  It will help with getting the baby weight off after birth and will help with labor and delivery.  Plus, it'll just make you feel better about yourself.  If you are not used to working out, start by walking everyday or take prenatal classes at a local gym, wellness center or yoga studio.

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy and i am a similar size. I gained a total of 3lbs with my first and 6lbs with my second. I would say try not to gain more then 15-20.

    1. 15lbs is the correct weight gain as your doctor said based on your pre-pregnancy BMI. It is not an exact number or you failed you may gain 14lbs or 17lbs (I'd consider within 5lbs of the goal success). I am a registered dietitian that was the pregnancy dietitian at my last job, this is NOT medical advice but I am familiar with the recommendations.
    2. You can get wax strips at walmart, they are double sided you just warm them with body heat for 10-30 seconds and use them like regular strips super easy for little things like that. I've heard hair doesn't grow back thicker but you cut off the end which is thinner when you shave so it looks thicker (I hope that makes sense).
    3. Exercise is great, I'd recommend walking to start (or swimming if you know how is great too). Ask your doctor at you next appointment if you can start something more intense like group aerobics. You could also look for a pregnancy exercise class. Lamaze is a breathing method for labor--I think the theories are little older and some argue ineffective, I hear more about it from my mom's generation than ours.
  • I am 5'5 and 225 at time I found out I was pregnant. I am 20 weeks and have only gained about 4 pounds. I am familiar with the guidelines of 15 pounds. I am going to try my hardest to stay within that. My OB says that as long as the baby keeps growing I have nothing to worry about. If I don't gain and the baby doesn't either he will have me increase my intake.

My Chiropractor said "in theory" at my weight I could go through the whole pregnancy and maintain my intake and while baby is growing I could be technically loosing weight. That would be medically fine for me.

All in all, I am just trying not to gain 50+ pounds. It would hurt my joints too much I think.
  • I'm also slightly chunky, I'm 20 weeks almost and I've gained 18lbs. Who cares, better than being hungry. Also I had an increase in tummy hair, asked my doctor about it, he said DO NOT shave it else it will keep growing. Where as right now its just there as a protective layer cuz thats where the baby is, its a bodies natural thing to do. Also, I swim alot. Easy on the baby and so much fun!
  • I'm 5'4" and started at about I think 175 maybe a little more. I was told to gain 11-20 lbs. the last month I gained 5 and was told by the doctor to eat healthier because at 17 weeks I guess I should only be gaining a pound a month. It's embarrassing to say but I think I've already gained 20 lbs and I walk over6 miles most days. in the beginning if I didn't eat every 2 hours Id feel so sick. Being on a low carb diet then eating carbs really takes a toll on you. Gosh I wish I could lose weight but it'll have to wait until after the baby comes. As far as shaving I wouldn't shave my whole tummy. I shave under my belly button but you'd be better off waxing. Exercise def helps pregnancy just don't overdo it.
  • FTM here as well. Hope everything is going well with your pregnancy so far!!

My hair is also growing like crazy!!! Not enjoying the ones on my belly. I've been plucking the more noticeable ones.

I've started pregnancy yoga classes? Supposed to help with the birth. I also have regular chiropractic care which is a godsend. Considering some water aerobics that I've seen advertised.

@torriej27 1. I am on the curvy side. Ask your Dr for a target weight gain for your body, but I will tell you that mine said "if you gain more and are eating the right things it's only going to take you longer to lose it"
    2. Haven't gotten the hair but shave it if you want to
    3. No aerobics unless you were active prepregnancy, ask your Dr, don't start a new exercise program while pregnant...I was allowed to continue to ride only because I did it before I got pregnant with only a no jumping/galloping restriction. Maybe try pregnancy yoga if you are looking for something to do?
3b. Lamaze is birth prep class.
  • 1. I am 19 weeks and I weighed about 260 when I got pregnant. I have been super sick the whole time and I have actually lost 20 pounds. My doctor said it was okay to gain up to 20. Honestly though in my opinion in not going to be upset if I gain more because as long as I am eating healthy then it is better than what I was doing pre-pregnancy.

    2. I am so over the excessive hair growth. The hair on my belly is blonde right now so I'm not doing anything with it yet. My other hair is enough to make me crazy- especially my arm pits :(

    3. I think anything within reason is fine. Just be aware of your limits and don't let yourself get exhausted before you stop. At my last appointment my doctor also said that I have placenta Pervia (which is normal) but if I experience any bleeding or if it hasn't fixed itself by my next appointment I will be on pelvic rest, so I am taking it much easier than before.
  • I'm pretty much right there with you. I'm 5'5". Started my first pregnancy 186 lbs and gained 70lbs. OB didn't say a thing. Lost all but 30 lbs before the start of this pregnancy (6 months PP just for reference), lost another 10 lbs first trimester, and now am only up a pound or two. OB still hasn't said a thing although WIC said about 2 lbs a month or up to 20 lbs total.

    2. I just shave the hair. I usually have it anyway with PCOS and have found shaving to be the easiest for me.

    3. Exercise within reason and check with your doctor before starting something new. If you've been mostly sedentary up to now aerobics might not be the best to start with. There are some pregnancy yoga classes at a beginner level that might be a better fit. Honestly even just walking would be good, go with someone and if you can't keep up a conversation you're working too hard. My doctor also recommends swimming during pregnancy. The buoyancy can be really nice.
