Use OBGYN with Doula or hire a midwife?

Hi ladies! I'm currently seeing an obgyn at the large hospital system in my city and have been really happy with them so far. I recently found out that the hospital system has a Midwifery unit and birthing centers that you can use instead of the actual hospital. If I stick with the obgyn, I've already decided I'd hire a doula for support. Anyone have any suggestions whether I should stay with my current doctors or is it worth looking into switching to the midwife birthing center?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Use OBGYN with Doula or hire a midwife?

  • Personally I would stay with the obgyn and hire a doula. Just in case anything were to go wrong I would rather have a doctor be there for me. I'm not very familiar with a midwife though. Just my two cents!

  • Midwives are trained for as long as doctors in the birthing process. You would have to meet with the specific group of midwives and decide if it's for you. If their unit is in the hospital, then OB will consult if the fetal heart rate is having issues or if labour is not progressing. Either way for myself I would have a doula! They are a great support and it's irrelevant whether you have a midwife or an OB (except for the midwife stays with you the entire birth and the OB drops in for the pushing lol).
  • Thanks for the suggestions! I think I'll just be sticking with the obgyn and doula since that's what I'm comfortable with. :D
  • I'd assume if the birthing center is related to the hospital the midwives are very well trained medical professionals (I have a cousin that is one I think she has a masters of nursing as a midwife as well as her normal nurse experience). Medical midwives also typically are located very close to the OB and know when you become higer risk and need an OB. I personally wouldn't be interested in less medical midwives (I think there is an apprentice version too). I think birthing centers typcially have a wider variety of options such as water births etc than a regular OB would. So, I would check to see what the birthing center vs OB has available and what you are most interested in before you make a decision. I was a reading a book about pregnancy, child birth and recovery written by a physical therapist and she made a big point about how laying down in labor is actually an un-natural and therefore inefficient way to push which can make it harder and so options like a birthing ball or water labor may provide more efficient options for labor.

  • I'm going with a midwife this time. Doctors are more likely to order unnecessary medical procedures that increase the chance of complications during labor and birth.
  • If you stick with the obgyn, definitely hire a doula.
